River City Rascals News Release

The Frontier Greys overcame an early four-run deficit to down River City Wednesday night. The Greys went deep three times in the game and ultimately prevailed 6-5.

The Rascals jumped on top in the first, taking advantage of a wild Matt Belcastro to plate the first runs of the game. Belcastro walked Eric Williams and Johnny Morales to start the game. Both would end up scoring, with Williams coming in on a wild pitch and Morales crossing the plate on an RBI single by Saxon Butler to give River City a 2-0 advantage.

They would add another in the second on an RBI groundout by Morales and one more in the fourth on an RBI base hit by Curran Redal that brought in Joe Staley. But after that, the bats would go into hibernation, allowing the Greys to claw their way back into the game.

Bryce Shafer, the starter for the Rascals, kept the Greys down for his first three innings. The fourth, though, was a different story. John Minucci started off that inning by going deep to center for a solo homerun. Frank Florio followed with a double and then Michael Vaughn took Shafer out of the park again. His shot went over the wall in center as well and made it 4-3.

Shafer would pitch a scoreless fifth and Chandle Jagodzinski would add a scoreless sixth to keep it a 4-3 game. Nick Kennedy entered in the seventh and struggled from the outset. The righty surrendered back-to-back singles to Zach Tanner and Joe Rapp to bring up Chris Ellison with two men on and no one out. Ellison sent an opposite-field shot to left that barely cleared the top of the fence for a three-run homer. That gave the Greys their first lead of the series, 6-4.

The Rascals loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Hector Crespo would drive in Joe Staley on a sacrifice fly to make it a 6-5 game, but that's all they would get. River City left a total of twelve on base in the game.

With the loss, the Raskies fall to 46-31 on the season. Devon Pearson, who threw 3 1/3 innings of one-run, four-hit ball in relief of Belcastro, got the win, while Kennedy got the loss, his fourth of the season. Jarret Leverett closed it out for the Greys, allowing a hit in the bottom of the ninth to Curran Redal but striking out Steve Carrillo looking to secure the win and earn his fifth save of the season.

The rubber match between the Rascals and Greys will be played Thursday at T.R. Hughes. First pitch will be 7:05. Tickets for all home Rascals games can be purchased by visiting www.rivercityrascals.com or by calling (636)-240-BATS.
