High Point-Thomasville HiToms News Release
ASHEBORO, N.C. - The Asheboro Copperheads scored three runs in the ninth inning to come from two-runs back and down the HiToms 6-5 at McCaray Park on Saturday night.
Trailing by two runs in the ninth inning, Asheboro scored three runs in the frame to come back and defeat the HiToms 6-5. With the bases loaded and the Copperheads down a run Noah Holmes came home to score on a pass ball off Jacob Fisher's mitt, the game ended on a chopper up the middle off the bat of Marquis Riley which scored Carvell Copeleand to give Asheboro a 6-5 win.
The HiToms (15-10) got on the board for the first time in the seventh inning off Charlie McCready as Patrick Koontz and Zack Briggs both singled to begin the inning and James Harris connected in a big way for a three-run home run over the wall in right center for a 3-0 Tommies lead.
Asheboro (11-13) pulled back to within a run in the last of the seventh off Austin Moyer to make it 3-2. With one out, Tommy Simis walked ahead of a Mike McCarthy double. That prompted the Tommies to make a pitching change in favor of Jonny Hoffman, the first hitter the right hander faced was Noah Holmes who laced a double down the leftfield line to score a pair of run which made it a one-run contest.
The HiToms were able to add a pair of insurance runs in the eighth as Garrett Koster singled home Tanner Mathis and Brock Hebert to put the Tommies up 5-2. It would, however, be another short lived lead as Hoffman gave up another run in the eighth to the Copperheads to within two-runs at 5-3.
That two-run lead prompted a pitching change for the visitors as Travis Tingle came in to get the last out of the eighth inning. However, the Copperheads were able to rally and win it in the ninth.
The Tommies travel to Gastonia for the final time tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for 5:30. They return to Finch Field on Tuesday night at 6:00 when they host the Copperheads in a doubleheader.
