Petersburg Walks Off vs. Edenton With Blast

PETERSBURG, VA - Taylor Buran smoked a towering home run in the bottom of the seventh to walk it off against the steamers, wasting a 12 strikeout performance by Benny Mejia.

Benny Mejia made his third start of the year for the Steamers and struggled early. After Edenton was retired in order in the top of the first Petersburg went to work. With one out Nick McQuail was hit by a pitch. After a Corbin Shive groundout, John Cleary was hit by a pitch. Taylor Buran reached on an infield single and Jorge Saez drew a bases loaded, RBI walk to put the Generals out in front 1-0.

Eric Conway made the start for Petersburg and in the top of the second Conway hit a bump. He walked Giacalone to begin the inning. With one out Brian Blasik singled and Tim Saunders dropped down a bunt that he beat out for an infield hit to load the bases. Kevin Whitehead was hit by a pitch that drove in Giacalone to tie the game. Ryan Brenner worked an RBI walk to give Edenton a 2-1 lead. With the bases still loaded Brett Christopher drove in a run with a fielder's choice and Bo Bigham picked up an RBI with a ground out to make it 4-1 Steamers.

Mejia, including the final out of the first inning, retired the next seven batters he faced and the next eleven of twelve batters in total. He struck out seven of them.

Edenton added a run in the top of the fifth against Charlie McCann, who entered the game in the third in relief of Conway. With one out Adam Giacalone reached on an error. Nathan Burns then hit a double that scored Giacalone to make it 5-1 steamers.

Petersburg was able to get back on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. Tyler McCarthy hit a dribbler between third base and shortstop and was able to beat out the infield single. Nick McQuail followed with a line drive single that sent McCarthy to third. McQuail took off for second base and Mejia spun around to throw to the bag. Once Mejia let go of the ball, McCarthy broke for the plate and scored to make it 5-2 Steamers.

David Teasley and Dustin Quattrocchi combined for a scoreless sixth inning against Petersburg and the Steamers were unable to score any insurance runs in the top of the seventh.

Jordan Egan came into the game to close the victory in the bottom of the seventh, trying to pick up his second save of the season. McCarthy reached on an error to begin the outing for Egan. McQuail struck out swinging and on the pitch McCarthy stole second base. Corbin Shive hit an RBI double off the left field wall to score McCarthy and make it 5-2 Steamers. John Cleary then singled and Shive was held at third base. Taylor Buran came up to the plate with two on and two out. Buran did not disappoint the home town crowd. He hit a towering three run home run over the left field wall to walk it off against the Steamers 6-5 in seven innings.

Egan took the loss and fell to 3-1, McCann, relief earned the victory to improve to 1-0.

The double header split makes the Steamers record 41-11 on the season and 21-3 in the second half and Petersburg is now 11-41 overall and 7-17 in the second half. Edenton travels to Wilson for the final time tomorrow night to play the Tobs.

The Edenton Steamers compete during the summer at Historic Hicks Field in downtown Historic Edenton, North Carolina. Currently in its 15th season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. The CPL has had over 930 alumni drafted and 45 alums have made their Major League debut thus far.
