Forest City Owls News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Forest City Owls fell to the South Division-leading Fayetteville Swampdogs, 10-3, in their only meeting of the summer on Saturday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium. The Owls drop to 13-12 in the second half and 29-23 overall, while the Swampdogs improve to 15-9 in the second half and 32-20 on the season.

Forest City sent right-hander Danny Healey (N.C. State) to the mound. Healey tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits, recording four strikeouts and two walks. Fayetteville called on righty Dom Macaluso (Saint Peter's), who allowed three runs (one earned) on eight hits in seven innings. Macaluso earned his sixth victory of the season, while Healey took his first loss of the summer.

Forest City wasted little time getting on the board. Danny Canela (N.C. State) flared a single into right center field with two outs in the top of the first inning. Konstantine Diamaduros (Wofford) scored to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. Forest City added another run in the following inning when Justin Britt (Southeastern CC) scored as Swampdogs 2B Jay Cannon (East Carolina) bobbled a groundball off the bat of Buddy Sosnoskie (Francis Marion).

The Owls led 2-0 until the bottom of the second inning. Fayetteville's Sal Giardina (Palm Beach State) chopped a single into right field, allowing Joe Vaskas (Emporia State) to score. The Swampdogs tied the game three at-bats later. With the bases loaded and one out, Kevin Weber (Tiffin) lifted a sacrifice fly to center, plating Giardina. Fayetteville took the lead an at-bat later when Cannon raced home on a wild pitch. The Swampdogs boasted a 3-2 lead after two frames.

Fayetteville struck again in the bottom of the third frame. With one out and a runner on second, John Hogan (Austin Peay) raked a triple down the left field line, sending Joe Ford (Sinclair CC) home and putting the Swampdogs ahead 4-2. The Owls inched closer in the top of the fourth when Craig Manuel (Rice) scored on a wild pitch. Fayetteville answered in the bottom of the frame when Cannon scored once again on a wild pitch to give the Swampdogs a 5-3 lead heading into the fifth inning.

The Swampdogs lit up the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. They took advantage of another Owls mistake when Cody Hudson (Austin Peay) slapped a groundball to first. Owls 1B Dusty Quattlebaum's (Gardner-Webb) throw home sailed all the way to the backstop, allowing Cannon to score from third. On the next at-bat, Ford looped a single into right field, driving in Weber and Hudson. Vaskas put the cherry on top of a five-run inning by blasting a two-run homer over the left field wall. When the dust settled, Fayetteville led 10-3 after six innings.

Manuel finished 4-for-4 with a run scored for Forest City. Cannon went 3-for-4 with three runs scored for the Swampdogs. Ford, Vaskas, and Weber each had two RBIs for Fayetteville.

The Owls will conclude their three-game road swing tomorrow afternoon by paying a visit to the Columbia Blowfish. First pitch at Capital City Stadium is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
