Guzman Goes the Distance in Steamer Victory

PETERSBURG, VA - Esteban Guzman kept the Generals off balance all night, allowing just four hits and one run in his complete game victory for the Steamers. Guzman collected seven strikeouts, while earning his second victory of the season.

The Generals and Steamers played a suspended game double header in Petersburg tonight. Game one was the completion of the game, in Edenton, that was suspended due to rain on July 24th and game two, the originally scheduled game for tonight, July 30th would follow the completion of game one.

The game was resumed in the bottom of the first with Petersburg leading already 1-0 after Taylor Buran hit an RBI single that scored Nick McQuail, who had reached on a fielder's choice.

Edenton had the bases loaded and one out with Nathan Burns up to the plate with a 2-2 count when play officially resumed. Burns struck out and Brian Blasik worked a walk from Corbin Shive that scored Ryan Brenner from third and tied the game 1-1.

Edenton took the lead for good in the game in the bottom of the second. Three hits in a row loaded the bases for the Steamers. Joey Wendle brought home a run with an RBI groundout that scored Jeff Calhoon and Zach Stewart hit an RBI infield single that scored Tim Saunders to make it 3-1.

In the third Edenton added yet another run on a Bo Bigham single that scored Nathan Burns and made it 4-1 Steamers.

Esteban Guzman retired ten batters in a row from the final out in the first inning until the lead-off batter in the fifth. He issued a walk to Michael Gonzalez to end the streak of retired batters.

The Steamers blew the game open in the sixth, knocking out Shive. With two outs Zach Stewart reached on a wild pitch that he struck out on to begin the rally. Two batters later, with the bases loaded Brian Blasik hit a three run double against Daniel Patrick to make it 7-1 Steamers; the double was Blasik 11th of the season. After Bigham was hit by a pitch, Calhoon hit a two-run double to score both Blasik and Bigham and complete the scoring at 9-1 Steamers.

Guzman retired the final 11 Generals he faced in pitching the first complete game by a Steamer in 2011.

Guzman improved to 2-0 in 2011, while Shive fell to 0-1 on the year. During the game Edenton broke its franchise record with the 124th stolen base of the season as a team. It came on a double steal in the third inning. The previous mark of 123 stolen bases was set by the 2005 Steamers. Edenton also eclipsed the CPL record for walks taken in a season, drawing their 263 walk of 2011. Forest City set the previous record of 262 in 2010.
