If your name is Ben and you play for the Edenton Steamers, then Friday night may have been the most memorable game of your life.
The Edenton Steamers defeated the Wilmington Sharks 3-2 in 10 innings at Hicks Field in the Clams' last game at home of the regular season.
With two outs and down by one run, Ben Whetstone crushed a walk-off two-run home run over the right field scoreboard that sent the fans home jumping with joy. The win pushed the Steamers to 11-11 in the second half.
Ben Anderson started the game and tallied a team season-high 14 strikeouts in seven shutout innings. Anderson handed over just three hits and no walks, lowering his summer earned run average to 0.91.
In 39.2 innings, Anderson finished with 59 strikeouts, which has him currently placed fourth in the Coastal Plain League. AJ Spencer and Jake Miller are ahead of him with 65 and 64, respectively.
Zane Harris tallied his 16th multi-hit game of the summer, going 2-for-5 with a run scored.
The Steamers pitching staff shoved 21 strikeouts, which marks the second of the year the Clams arms recorded at least 20 punch-outs.
RD Lutze added 6 in two innings, picking up his fourth win.
Wilmington's Landen Wright tossed a solid night as well, striking out 11 Steamers in six innings. He allowed just one run.
Will Varnadore got the loss, throwing 3.2 frames with four strikeouts.
Michael Varga made things interesting in the eighth with a solo home run on the first pitch following Anderson's exit. Carson Lester surrendered the big fly, but settled in afterwards with no more runs plated.
Edenton closes out the regular season with a doubleheader on the road against the Peninsula Pilots set for a 6 p.m. start.
