Miller Time Allows Playoff Bid to Live another Day
August 3, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release
Jake Miller's seven innings of shutout work kept the Steamers chances of making the playoffs alive on Thursday night, defeating the Wilson Tobs 6-0 at Fleming Stadium.
The win pushed the Clams' second half record to 10-11, which dropped Wilson's to 12-9. Edenton is now just two games back with three regular season matchups remaining.
Miller improved to 5-2, punching out nine Tobs batters to bring his season total to 64, placing him third in the entire Coastal Plain League.
Matt Gill and Alex Hart tossed the final two innings to cement the Steamers' first shutout this summer.
The Clams got going early on in the first inning. After an Anthony Jefferson base knock, he was brought home by CPL Player of the Week Ben Whetstone on a two-bagger. Whetstone finished with two hits to log his 11th multi-hit game of the year.
Zane Harris launched his eighth home run in the third inning to deep right field over the triple-decker of advertisement signs.
Edenton was quiet for a few innings, but that was all the run support Miller needed in his final start of the regular season, finishing with a 3.16 earned run average in 51.1 innings.
The Teal and Black rallied for four hits in the eighth frame to tack on three more runs, putting the game out of reach for Wilson.
TJ Wegmann and Tim Bechtold scooped RBI base hits each, knocking in Whetstone and Rich Ciufo, who singled earlier.
Anthony Warneke contributed with two hits, including a double to lead off the second inning. This marked his 10th double with the Clams.
Edenton plays just three more games in the regular season. They return to action on Friday night at home against the Wilmington Sharks and close out the schedule with a doubleheader at Peninsula.
