Morehead City Marlins News Release
Morehead City, N.C. - For the fifth separate time this summer, the Morehead City Marlins are above .500. Thanks to an off-day from RedWolves starter Daniel Palo and another gem from Shawn Armstrong, the Marlins have broken further into the Petitt Cup Playoff seeding as they head into their final three games of the season-all against the Wilmington Sharks.
Things did not look good for the Marlins' ace right out of the gates, though. In the top of the first, Shane Basen and Shane Brown singled and Florence cleanup man Blake Barber drove in both on a hit of his own, making the score an early 2-0 advantage for the RedWolves. However, Armstrong came back to deliver quite the performance: seven innings, allowing three earned on six hits, walking one, and striking out eleven. Armstrong advances his season record to 6-2 after earning his fourth win in four starts against the RedWolves. His counterpart Palo finished the evening with 2.2 innings pitched, six earned on four hits, just one strikeout and nine walks.
The Marlins lineup certainly did enough damage to pull out the victory, even despite committing four errors on defense. Designated hitter Chase McDonald recorded an RBI-double in his second plate appearance to come within just two RBIs of tying the CPL's single-season record of 51. Shortstop and cleanup hitter Joe Sclafani nabbed himself two hits and two RBIs, and outfielder Jake Carlson was 2-for-3 with a run driven in from the leadoff spot.
Advancing to 27-26 overall, the Marlins place themselves in the driver's seat of their playoff fate. Because Wilmington split their doubleheader with the Columbia Blowfish, the Sharks now sit at 26-27 overall-a full game behind the Marlins. With two wins over Wilmington in their final three games, the Marlins would earn a postseason berth and a chance to win the Petitt Cup.
Morehead City will first trek to Wilmington on Sunday and will then host the Sharks at Big Rock Stadium for two consecutive days on Monday and Tuesday. Monday will be "Bark in the Park" night at "The Rock," as well as another Golden Corral Military Monday. Tuesday is Communities in Schools Stuff the Bus Night, in addition to the obvious Two For Tuesday. Gates open at 6 o'clock on both days, and the games are scheduled to each start at 7:05 p.m.
The Morehead City Marlins are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league.
