Blowfish Lose Game One of Doubleheader

The Columbia Blowfish (9-15; 18-34) gave up two runs in the bottom of the seventh, and the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth, losing game one of a doubleheader to the Wilmington Sharks (13-11; 26-26), 3-2 in eight innings at Buck Hardee Field on Saturday night.

The Blowfish scored in the top of the second inning on a RBI double by Reggie Weatherford, off Sharks' starting pitcher Chris Mazza, scoring Carlos Santana to take the lead, 1-0.

Columbia added another run in the top of the fifth inning. Chase Vergason hit a sacrifice fly to score Weatherford, giving the Blowfish a 2-0 lead.

Blowfish starting pitcher Patrick Ludwig shut down the Sharks through six innings, only allowing four batters to reach base.

The Sharks broke up the shutout in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jake Mayers led off the inning with a single. Daniel Aldrich and Aaron Preston followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to tie the game 2-2.

Ludwig gave up two runs on five hits, while striking out eight batters in seven innings.

Mazza retired the Blowfish in order in the top of the eighth inning. Mazza (5-3) gave up two runs on six hits over eight innings in his second complete game of the season.

The Sharks led off the bottom of the eighth with a single by Justyn Carter off Blowfish relief pitcher Gabe Grammer (0-1). Alex Freedman followed with a bunt to move Carter to second base. On the play, Carter forced an errant throw by Tyler Jackson, while trying to advance to third base. The throw allowed Carter to score, giving the Sharks a 3-2 win.
