
Connecticut Slips Past Thunder

(Norwich, CT)- Connecticut scored three runs in the third inning, and tripped up Trenton 4-3 on Monday afternoon from Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. Trenton and Connecticut ended up splitting the 14 game season-series.
Trenton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez doubled to start the inning and moved to third base on a groundout by Thunder Catcher Ryan Baker. Gonzalez scored on a sacrifice fly RBI by Center fielder Austin Krum. But, the Defenders would respond with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. All of the runs were scored with two outs. With two outs in the inning, Connecticut Second baseman Brock Bond walked against Trenton Starting Pitcher Wilkin De La Rosa (3-5). Center fielder Mike McBryde followed with an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1. Connecticut First baseman Brett Pill then singled to score McBryde and give the Defenders a 2-1 lead. After a walk to Connecticut Right fielder Eddy Martinez-Esteve, Designated Hitter Ramon Castro capped off the scoring with an RBI single to plate Pill, and increase the lead to 3-1. Connecticut added a run in the fourth inning on a two-out RBI single by Catcher Jackson Williams.
Trenton cut into the lead in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Outfielder Richie Robnett. The home run was Robnett's first with the Thunder. Trenton pulled within a run at 4-3 in the eighth inning on a two-out RBI single by First baseman Jorge Vazquez. Gonzalez had two doubles in the loss, and finished the series with five doubles.
De La Rosa gave up five hits and four runs over 3 2/3 innings to take the loss. He struck out five and walked three. Connecticut Starting Pitcher Garrett Broshius (2-0) tossed 6 1/3 innings and scattered five hits and two runs to pick up the win. Connecticut Reliever Dan Otero pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 17th save of the season. Trenton Reliever Kevin Whelan pitched three perfect innings of relief for the Thunder. He struck out four.
Trenton is off on Tuesday and Wednesday for the Eastern League All-Star Break. Seven Thunder players will participate in the Eastern League All-Star Game at Waterfront Park. Trenton returns to action on Thursday night. The Thunder start a four-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs (Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox). LHP Jeremy Bleich (0-3, 6.00) will start for Trenton. Portland's Starting Pitcher is TBD. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
