
Eastern League Pitcher-Player of the Week Awards

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the week ending July 12th:
Erie SeaWolves first baseman Ryan Strieby has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending July 12th. The 23-year old had an outstanding week for the SeaWolves, hitting .455 (10-for-22) with one double, two home runs, eight runs scored, five RBI, five walks and a .773 slugging percentage in six games. The 6'5", 235 lb. slugger had at least one hit in each of the games he played in last week and had three multiple hit games, including going 3-for-4 with one homer, one RBI and two runs scored in a 6-4 win over Akron on Saturday night. Strieby, who is a native of Seattle, Washington, currently has an eight-game hitting streak and leads the league in OPS (.997). He is also ranked among the league leaders in on-base percentage (.427-2nd), home runs (17-tied 2nd), slugging percentage (.570-3rd), runs scored (57-4th), walks (48-4th), total bases (147-tied 5th), RBI (53-8th) and batting average (.310-8th). Ryan, who was named to the Southern Division roster for the 2009 Eastern League All-Star Game in Trenton, New Jersey on July 14th, was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round of the 2006 draft after hitting .343 with 20 home runs and 77 RBI and being selected as the SEC Player of the Year during his junior season at the University of Kentucky.
Brian Matusz, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Bowie Baysox, is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 12th. The 22-year old made one appearance for the Baysox last week and posted a record of 1-0 with 11 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA in eight innings pitched. Matusz was nearly unhittable in his only start of the week in a 6-0 win over Harrisburg at Prince George's Stadium on Tuesday night. He struck out eight batters and did not allow a walk while giving up just one hit, a fourth inning single. The 6'5", 200 lb. southpaw faced just one batter over the minimum in his eight innings of work while earning his fourth win of the season. The Grand Junction, Colorado native has been outstanding since making his Double-A debut with the Baysox on June 17th following a promotion from Class-A Frederick. He has made four starts for Bowie and has a record of 4-0 with 32 strikeouts and a 0.34 ERA while allowing just 11 hits and six walks in 26.1 innings of work. Brian, who entered the season ranked by Baseball America as the 3rd best prospect in the Orioles organization, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the first round of the 2008 draft as the fourth overall pick after going 12-2 with a 1.71 ERA as a junior at the University of San Diego.
