Defenders Win 4-3

NORWICH, CT- On getaway day before the All Star break the Defenders responded by pulling out a 4-3 win over Trenton while also obtaining a series split.

Two out rallies were the theme of the game for Connecticut as C-Jackson Williams cracked an RBI single to drive in SS-Brandon Crawford, who drew a two out walk in the fourth inning and gave the Defenders the lead for good.

Trenton struck first in the third with a leadoff single by SS-Edwar Gonzalez who advanced to third on a groundout then scored on CF-Austin Krum's sac fly to center.

Connecticut responded in the bottom of the inning with a two out rally by plating three runs to take the lead. 2B-Brock Bond drew a walk then scored on a CF-Mike McBryde RBI double. McBryde came around quickly as 1B-Brett Pill ripped an RBI single, his 100th of the season then scored on a DH-Ramon Castro RBI single for a 3-1 advantage.

With the score 4-1, the Thunder started to chip away cutting the lead in half on a LF-Rich Robnett solo homer in the fifth then to one run with 1B-Jorge Vazquez's long RBI single to score Nunez.

Defender's closer RHP-Dan Otero came in and fired a three up three down ninth and claimed his seventh save of the year. Connecticut starter RHP-Garrett Broshuis (2-0) picked up his second win in his second start tossing 6.1 innings, allowed two earned runs off of five hits and struck out a pair. Thunder starter- LHP-Wilkin De La Rosa (3-5) allowed four earned runs off of five hits, walked three and struck out five in 3.2 innings in his fifth loss.

Both teams will have the next two days off for the All Star Break and the big game on Wednesday, July 15 at Waterfront Park in Trenton, NJ. Connecticut will be represented by pitchers LHP-Joe Paterson and RHP-Dan Otero as well as OF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve and 2B-Brock Bond.

The Defenders return to action on Thursday, July 16 up in New Hampshire as they begin an eight day road-trip.
