
Connecticut slips by Trenton

(Trenton, NJ)- Connecticut scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, and slipped past Trenton 3-2 on Thursday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton finished 3-4 on its seven-game home stand.
Connecticut took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning. Connecticut First baseman Brett Pill led off the frame with a single. He advanced to second on a balk by Thunder Starting Pitcher Ivan Nova (2-1), and moved to third base on a wild pitch. He scored a sacrifice fly RBI by First baseman Mike Mooney. Connectictut's bullpen tossed four shutout innings to preserve the lead. Connecticut Reliever Dan Otero pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his fifth save, and second in the series.
Connecticut scored two runs in the top of the first inning off of Nova. Designated Hitter Brad Boyer doubled to lead-off the game for Connecticut. Left fielder Antoan Richardson laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Thunder Cather Francisco Cervelli committed an error on the throw down to first base. The error allowed Boyer to score and Richardson to advance to second base. Right fielder Eddy Martinez-Esteve followed with an RBI double to plate Richardson and make it 2-0.
Trenton sliced the Connecticut lead to 2-1 in the third inning on an RBI single by Shortstop Eduardo Nunez. The Thunder tied the game in fourth inning on an RBI double by Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci. Vechionacci extended his hitting streak to seven games with the RBI double.
Nova went 5 1/3 innings and allowed eight hits and three runs (two earned). He struck out four and walked two. Connecticut Starting Pitcher Daryl Maday went five innings and yielded four hits and two runs. Trenton's bullpen tossed 11 2/3 shutout innings in the series.
Trenton heads to New Britain (Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins) on Friday to start a three-game series against the Rock Cats. RHP Ryan Pope will start for Trenton against New Britain RHP Matthew Fox (1-1, 4.15). Game time is set for 6:35 p.m.
