Connecticut Defenders News Release
TRENTON, NJ- It was déjà vu for the Defenders in Trenton Thursday night as Connecticut defeated the Thunder for the second straight night by the final score of 3-2 and won the series 2-1.
A manufactured run in the sixth inning for Connecticut put them in front for good as 1B-Brett Pill reached with a single, went to second on a balk, advanced to third on a wild pitch then scored on a CF-Mike Mooney sacrifice fly to give the Defenders a 3-2 edge.
The Defenders got out to an early start in the first inning with a leadoff double down the left-field line by 2B-Brad Boyer then later scored on a throwing error by C-Francisco Cervelli to first to get LF-Antoan Richardson who laid down a sac bunt and Connecticut lead 1-0. Richardson followed with a run of his own when RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve tripled to center-field to give the Defenders an early 2-0 advantage.
Trenton trimmed into the lead in the third inning with an RBI single by SS-Eduardo Nunez to plate RF-James Cooper who got hit by pitch to leadoff the inning.
The Thunder tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a pair of doubles by CF-Colin Curtis and 3B-Marcos Vechionacci.
Connecticut received outstanding pitching for the second straight night. Starter, RHP-Daryl Maday (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after hurling five innings of four hit ball, allowed just two earned runs, and struck out a pair. Defenders reliever, LHP-Ben Snyder silenced the Thunder throwing three scoreless innings setting up RHP-Dan Otero to close the door on Trenton and pick up his fifth save of the season. The win marked the second straight winning series as the Defenders went 5-2 this road-trip.
Trenton's starter, RHP-Ivan Nova (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season in his second outing versus Connecticut. Nova tossed 5.1 innings, gave up three runs, two earned off of eight hits, walked two and struck out four.
The Defenders travel home to begin a seven game home-stand Friday, with the first set beginning with a three game series versus the Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox).
