Akron RubberDucks News Release
AKRON, OH - The Aeros scored four runs in the fourth and iced the game with five runs late, defeating Harrisburg 9-3 before 4,127 fans at Canal Park Thursday morning and also completing a three-game sweep of the Senators. Akron improved to a league-best 16-4 (the best 20-game start in team history) while Harrisburg lost its 12th straight game and fell to 2-16. It was Akron's first three-game series sweep since June 17th-19th of last season at Bowie.
The Senators scored first with a run in the top of the second, but the Aeros answered emphatically in the fourth. Beau Mills led off with a booming home run on the first pitch of the inning, and Carlos Santana followed three pitches later with a solo blast of his own to make it 2-1. It was the first time Akron had hit back-to-back shots since Trevor Crowe and Josh Rodriguez turned the trick June 20th of last year at Reading. Senators starter Cory VanAllen retired the next two hitters, but a single by Damaso Espino and consecutive RBI doubles from John Drennen and Jerad Head pushed the lead to 4-1. The Aeros then tacked on plenty of insurance thanks to Carlos Rivero, who lined a two-run double to left-center in the seventh before socking a three-run homer in the eighth.
Jeanmar Gomez (1-0) earned the win with five impressive innings in his Eastern League debut, holding Harrisburg to a run on only two hits. He walked one, struck out five, and retired the last eight batters he faced in order. VanAllen (0-2), who pitched collegiately at Baylor University, allowed four runs and eight hits in four innings and took the loss. Rivero led the way offensively, finishing 2-5 with five RBI (a season-high for any Aeros hitter this year). Mills, Santana, Espino and Drennen also finished with two hits apiece and every Akron starter had at least one hit for the second straight game. Akron also equaled its season-high with 14 hits for the second straight game.
The Aeros will now depart for a weeklong road trip, beginning with the opener of a three-game series in Bowie at 7:05 p.m. Friday. Left-hander Chuck Lofgren (1-0, 1.13 ERA), who tossed six no-hit innings in his last start, will go for Akron against Baysox left-hander Bobby Livingston (1-1, 3.57 ERA). The game broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 WARF-AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
