Connecticut slams door on Portland, Dogs lose 6-2

(Portland, ME) Connecticuts CF Mike Mooney blasted a grand-slam and the bullpen pitched 6 scoreless innings as the Defenders (6-8) beat Portland (6-7), 6-2 on Thursday night at Hadlock Field in front of 4,299 fans. The Sea Dogs suffered their 3rd straight loss while Connecticut ended a 5-game losing streak.

Defenders LHP Ben Snyder (1-1) hurled four scoreless innings of 1-hit ball to earn the win for the visitors. Portland starter RHP Jarod Plummer, who made his Hadlock Field debut, allowed six runs on nine hits to take the loss for the Dogs. Portlands bullpen combination of RHP Chris Province (2 IP), RHP Chad Rhoades (IP), RHP T.J. Large (IP) and RHP Justin Hedrick combined for 5 scoreless innings on one hit and three strikeouts. Snyder, RHP Mike Musgrave and RHP Daniel Otero held Portland to just three hits and fanned five in the final six frames.

The Sea Dogs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning off starter RHP Henry Sosa. CF Josh Reddick led off the first with a double, advanced to third base on C Mark Wagners single and scored on DH Aaron Bates sacrifice fly. Connecticut came right back the next half inning, tying the game on C Jackson Williams, 2-out RBI double.

Mooney gave Connecticut the lead for good with his grand slam with two outs (3-1 pitch) in the third inning. Portland added their final run in the third inning on RF Bubba Bells homer into the U.S. Cellular Pavilion. LF Bobby Felmy added the games final run by doubling home SS Brian Bocock in the fourth inning.
