Jorge Vasquez promoted from Tampa to Trenton

(Trenton, NJ)- The Trenton Thunder, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that INF Jorge Vasquez has been promoted from Tampa (High-A) to Trenton. INF Kevin Smith has been transferred from Trenton to the roster of the Staten Island Yankees (New York-Penn).

Vasquez did not play in a game for Tampa. He did play five games for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic. He hit .294 with a home run and five RBI. Vasquez was signed by the Yankees as a free agent on 12/7/08. Vasquez played ten seasons for Tigres de Quintana Roo of the Mexican League. In 2008, he hit .339 with 18 home runs and 59 RBI. He recorded at least a .300 average and 15 HR in each of his last five seasons (2004-08). He has a career Mexican league average of .321 with 151 career home runs and 491 RBI.

Smith has a .233 BA with three RBI in 10 games for the Thunder including a double and a triple. In 2008, he hit .290 with five home runs and 62 RBI for Tampa. He led the team in games, average, hits, doubles and RBI. He ranked 2nd in the Florida State League in doubles and 9th in average. He led all Florida State League first baseman with a .994 fielding percentage. He was originally selected in the 39th round of the 2006 draft out of the University of Oklahoma.

Trenton returns to Waterfront Park on Thursday night to start a series against the New Britain Rock Cats (Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins). RHP Zach McAllister (0-0, 2.61) will start for Trenton against New Britain LHP Ryan Mullins (0-2, 3.86).
