Connecticut Defenders News Release

PORTLAND, ME- Change is sometimes good, but for the Defenders getting away from Dodd Stadium helped them put a stop to a five game skid as they defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 6-2 at Hadlock Field Thursday night.

The balance of good offense and pitching set the table for a great win for the Defenders. It was a grand slam from CF-Mike Mooney in the fourth inning that put Connecticut out in front 5-1 and they would never look back.

The Sea Dogs jumped out in front in the home half of the first inning with a sacrifice fly from DH-Aaron Bates to score CF-Josh Reddick who leadoff with a double, Portland had a 1-0 advantage.

Connecticut responded in the top of the second when RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve leadoff with a base hit and was driven in by a C-Jackson Williams double passed the diving glove of third baseman, Jorge Jimenez to tie the game at 1-1.

The Sea Dogs added a run in the third on a solo homer by LF-Bubba Bell to make it 5-2 Connecticut and the Defenders tacked on their last run in the fourth off a LF-Bobby Felmy RBI single to plate SS-Brian Bocock, Connecticut led 6-2.

RHP-Ben Snyder (1-0) turned in a fantastic outing and was rewarded with his first win of the season. Snyder tossed four scoreless innings allowed just one hit while he struck out three. The Sea Dogs starter, RHP-Jarod Plummer (0-1) suffered in first loss of the year in just his second start. Plummer got knocked around for six earned runs off of five hits in just four innings, while walking one and struck out five.

Tomorrow's matchup in game 2 of 4 sends, RHP-Daryl Maday (0-0) for the Defenders against LHP-Felix Doubront (1-0) for the Sea Dogs. It's a Connecticut's no. 1 starter versus the Red Sox no. 27 ranked prospect (according to Baseball America).
