Thunder Defeat New Britain 4-1 On Thursday Night

(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton Outfielder Jorge Vasquez hit a two-run home run and had four RBI in his Thunder debut, as the Thunder defeated the New Britain Rock Cats 4-1 on Thursday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton halted a two-game losing streak with the win.

With the game scoreless in the fourth inning, Trenton Outfielder Colin Curtis singled with one out off of New Britain Starting Pitcher Ryan Mullins (0-3). After Trenton Outfielder Edwar Gonzalez struck out, Vasquez connected for a two-run home run down the third-base line to put the Thunder in front 2-0. Vasquez was called up earlier in the day from Tampa (High-A). New Britain (4-9) closed to 2-1 in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly RBI by Right fielder Rene Tosoni. But, Trenton (7-5) responded with two runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Shortstop Eduardo Nunez and Second baseman Reegie Corona hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. After a sacrifice bunt by Curtis, Gonzalez was intentionally walked to load the bases for Vasquez. Vasquez followed by singling home two runs to make it 4-1.

Trenton Starting Pitcher Zach McAllister (1-0) went seven solid innings to pick up his first Double-A win. He only allowed two hits and one run. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. ThE seven innings was the longest outing by a Thunder starting pitcher so far this season. Trenton Reliever Michael Dunn came on for McAllister and tossed two shutout innings to pick up his second save. Dunn struck out three. Mullins took the loss for New Britain. He allowed five hits and four runs in 5 1/3 innings. Curtis extended his hitting streak for the Thunder to nine games with a fourth-inning single.

Trenton continues its series with New Britain Rock Cats (Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins) on Friday night. RHP Ivan Nova (1-0, 1.42) will start for Trenton against New Britain RHP Cole Devries (1-1, 5.59). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
