Altoona Curve News Release
(Akron, OH) The Akron Aeros scored seven runs to erase a three run deficit en-route to a 9-5 win over the Altoona Curve in game one of a five game series with the Curve from Canal Park in Akron. The win gives Akron an eight game lead on the Curve in the Southern Division.
With Altoona leading 3-0, Akron 2B Josh Rodriguez led off the bottom of the third inning with a single to right. John Drennan hit what looked to be a double play ball, but Curve 2B Jim Negrych's throw to the second base bag pulled SS Pedro Lopez off the bag, putting runners at first and second. Mickey Hall singled to center, loading the bases with nobody out. Jose Constanza stepped to the plate and hit a groundball to Negrych, who flipped the ball to Lopez for the force at second, but Lopez throw to first was wide allowing Rodriguez and Drennan to score, making it a 3-2 game.
Akron scored five times in the fourth inning to take a 7-3 lead. After a single by Carlos Santana, Niumann Romero laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached second base when Angel Gonzalez's throw went down the right-field line, putting runners at second and third with nobody out. Nick Weglarz hit a groundball to Negrych who threw the ball past Curve 1B Jason Delaney, allowing two runs to score as Akron took a 4-3 lead. A walk to Josh Rodriguez and a one out walk to Hall loaded the bases. Constanza unloaded the bases with a double to the left-centerfield alley, giving the Aeros a 7-3 lead.
Josh Tomlin (2-1) picked up the win, despite allowing four runs on eight hits over five innings of work. The Aeros bullpen allowed a run on just one hit over the final four innings of play. Jared Hughes suffered the loss, dropping his record to 0-2 on the campaign. Hughes allowed seven runs (all unearned) on just five hits over 3 2/3 innings.
The Curve and Aeros play a doubleheader at Canal Park beginning at 6:05 pm. One of the games is a makeup game from the postponed contest on April 14th. Right-hander Mike Crotta (1-0 1.59) gets the call in game one for the Curve. He will be opposed by righty Steven Wright (1-0 4.00). Right-hander Yoslan Herrera (0-0 6.00) gets the start in the nightcap for the Curve. Akron is undecided on who they will start.
