Altoona Curve News Release

YESTERDAY: The Altoona Curve won a back and forth ballgame that featured three ties and five lead changes in a 5-4 win over Reading Wednesday at Blair County Ballpark...Jim Negrych drove in the decisive run in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double...Jeff Sues picked up the win in relief of starter Brad Lincoln, while Jean Machi locked down his first save of the year.

TONIGHT'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Altoona Curve will take on the Akron Aeros in a four-day, five game series. Altoona has won three of its last four contests after starting the season 0-8.

TONIGHT'S STARTING PITCHERS: Altoona's Jared Hughes will make his third start of the season. In his last outing, Hughes lasted just 0.2 innings in a loss to Erie. Hughes allowed three runs on three hits during that span...The last outing for Hughes was quite a contrast to his first appearance of ‘09. Hughes tossed 6.0 no-hit, scoreless innings against the Wolves on 4/10.

Akron will counter with right-hander Josh Tomlin. Tomlin, won his last start at Bowie, permitting just one run on four hits...Tomlin was drafted by Cleveland in the 19th round of the 2006 June draft.

SCOUTING THE AEROS: Akron's 10 wins are currently tops in the Eastern League. Akron has won five straight and 8 of their last 10...Carlos Santana is tied for the league lead in homers (4) and leads the circuit in RBI (14)...Akron's team ERA (2.18) is also tops in the E.L...Vinnie Pestano also has gotten off to a great start for the Aeros, anchoring the back-end of the team's bullpen. His six saves are tied for tops in the league.

CANAL CURSE: So far this year, Altoona has dropped two straight games at Canal Park, which goes along with the team's historic struggles playing the Aeros on their home turf. The Curve have a not-so flattering all-time mark of 40-62.

TOUGH OUT: The Altoona Curve bats have the early signs of being a tough out for opposing Eastern League hitters. The Curve have only struck out 67 times as a team, which is the fewest in the Eastern League.

BULL OF A PEN: With over the last five games, Altoona's bullpen has been called to duty often. They have come through, tossing 34.0 innings over that span, allowing just four earned runs (1.06 ERA).

PUT ON YOUR GREEN HAT, WE'RE GOING STREAKING: A few Curve hitters have modest hitting streaks going. Jose Tabata (.294, 5x17) has hit in his last four contests, while Jim Negrych has has hit in five straight (.471, 8x17)
