Chesapeake Baysox News Release
The Baysox dropped the first of a three game series in Reading on Thursday, despite not trailing until the final pitch of the game. Reading outfielder Michael Taylor hit a walk-off home run, his second of the game, in the bottom of the eleventh inning off Baysox righty Fredy Deza to give the Phillies the win 7-6. Danny Figueroa and Dave Krynzel homered for the Baysox, but it was not enough as the Baysox drop to 6-7 on the season.
Paco Figueroa continued to make things happen as the Baysox jumped out to an early lead in the third. After reaching first on a fielder's choice and Guillermo Rodriguez on third with two outs, Figueroa stole second off Phillies starter Vance Worley. The throw from catcher Kevin Nelson was wild, allowing Rodriguez to score from first to give the Baysox a 1-0 advantage. The Baysox added another run in the fourth as Dave Krynzel took Worley deep for his second home run of the season. Krynzel went 1-4 with a walk in the game. He also stole his fifth base of the season in the seventh inning, which tied him for second in the Eastern League.
Baysox starter Troy Patton pitched well but saw his scoreless streak come to an end at 17.1 innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Patton gave up a two-run home run to Michael Taylor to tie the game at two. It was the first earned run Patton has allowed since September 1, 2007 as a member of the Houston Astros. The young left-hander exited the game one batter later, ending his night after allowing two hits and three walks with a strikeout in 5.1 innings of work.
The Baysox would regain the lead in the top of the seventh as Danny Figueroa followed his twin brother Paco's example of making things happen with the bat. With Dave Krynzel on second and two outs, Guillermo Rodriguez singled off Worley to put men on the corners, knocking Worley out of the game in favor of right-hander Pat Overholt. Figueroa welcomed him to the game with a three-run home run to left-center field to give the Baysox a three run advantage at 5-2. The home run Figueroa's first of the year and the fourth in 894 career at-bats for the Baysox center fielder.
Once again the Baysox could not hold the lead, as the Baysox bullpen struggled with control. Kevin Nelson led off the inning with a home run off Josh Perrault. The homer ended Perrault's scoreless streak at 16.0 innings, which dated back to 2008. After getting the next two batters, Perrault issued a walk to Brad Harmon and a single to Michael Taylor before being replaced by right-hander Ryan Keefer. Keefer struggled to find the strike zone, walking Brian Stavisky and Kevin Mahar to force in a run to bring Reading within one. Manager Brad Komminsk replaced Keefer with lefty Ryan Rodriguez, who walked Neil Sellers to score the tying run before getting out of the inning with the score tied at five apiece.
The Baysox took the lead back in the eighth, as Melvin Dorta drew a walk with one out. Brandon Snyder followed with a double to left which plated Melvin Dorta and give the Baysox the lead. Snyder has been a steady force for the Baysox this season, hitting safely in eleven of 13 games on the season and leading the team with nine runs batted in.
Kevin Nelson singled off Rodriguez to start the bottom of the eighth inning, the third consecutive inning in which the leadoff hitter reached base to start the inning. Rodriguez retired the next two hitters before being replaced by Wilfrido Perez, who gave up an RBI double to Reading second baseman Brad Harman to tie the game. Michael Taylor followed with a single to left as the Phillies looked to take the lead, but Dave Krynzel fired a strike to Guillermo Rodriguez to nail Harman at the plate and keep the game tied at six.
The two teams remained scoreless as they went into extra innings. Fredy Deza worked a scoreless ninth and tenth inning for the Baysox, but Michael Taylor took him deep to lead off the bottom of the eleventh to give Reading the victory. The loss drops the Baysox (6-7) to fourth place in the Eastern League South, five games behind division leading Akron. Reading improves to 8-4, two and a half games behind the Aeros.
Tomorrow's game features RHP Brandon Erbe (0-2, 1.00 ERA) going up against Reading RHP Michael Stutes (2-0, 2.45 ERA). Game time is set for 7:05.
