Condors Remain Perfect Through Five Games
November 7, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors scored four unanswered goals and improved to 5-0 on the season with a 4-1 victory over the dreaded San Diego Gulls on Saturday night in front of 5,473 fans at Centennial Garden. Goaltender Yutaka Fukufuji earned his first victory of the season with a 26-save performance.
The Gulls came out hard and pounded Bakersfield netminder Yutaka Fukufuji with shots early. Fukufuji, starting his first ECHL game since the 2002-03 season (when he appeared in nine games) was finally beaten by Mark Pederson to open the scoring just 3:38 in. Trailing in shots at the time 8-0, Paul Rosebush finally woke up the Condors offense by driving hard to the net on a 2-on-1. His shot was stopped, but traffic in front caused the puck to slip loose and trickled past Trevor Koenig for the equalizer at 8:12. Mike Hofstrand finished off a strong effort by Todd Alexander just over three minutes later for the eventual game-winning goal.
During a scoreless second period the Condors took over the shot advantage, outpacing the Gulls 15-6 in the frame and continuing it during the third. Guy Dupuis extended the lead on the power play at 3:47 with a blast from the right point and Dennis Shiryaev put the icing on top with a penalty shot goal that he slipped through the five hole for the final margin. The Condors finished with a 41-27 shot advantage and moved into a first place tie with Idaho in the West, who defeated Victoria 6-2 in Boise tonight.
The Condors return to action with three games in three nights next week, starting with Student ID Night on Thursday against Toledo. All junior high, high school and college students can purchase tickets in the lower bowl for just $1 by presenting their student ID to the Garden box office, sponsored by WB-12 and KRAB Radio 106.1. On Friday there will be a special visit from the world's smallest Elvis impersonator, Little 'e', as the Storm and Condors meet again. On Saturday the Condors will don special Veteran's Day jerseys for the first Jersey Off Our Backs raffle and auction to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. All games, home and away, can be heard on KGEO AM 1230 with "Condors Countdown" starting 15 minutes prior to the drop of the puck.
