Phoenix, Ariz. - The Bakersfield Condors used three third period power play goals to defeat the Phoenix RoadRunners 6-4 before 5,622 at America West Arena in ECHL action Friday.
Bakersfield (9-7-4) jumped on the scoreboard just 4:47 into the first period. Nate Metcalf's shot from the blue line beat RoadRunners goaltender Mathieu Chouinard along the ice to give the Condors a 1-0 lead.
Kevin St. Jacques extended the lead to 2-0 at 2:52 of the second period. St. Jacques collected the puck behind the net and wrapped it through the legs of Chouinard to open the period. However, the RoadRunners (8-12-2) would counter with a pair of goals 1:08 seconds apart. Dean Tiltgen re-directed Jake Riddle's centering feed past Bakersfield goaltender Ryan Munce at 10:38 to cut the deficit to 2-1. Jason Deskins brought Phoenix back to even strength when his blast from the right-wing circle zipped over Munce's blocker and into the back of the net at 11:46 to the game at 2-2.
The Condors scored two quick power play goals to open the third period. Sean Venedam gave Bakersfield a 3-2 lead 1:39 into the period. Metcalf made it 4-2 at 4:11 when his shot from the blue line deflected off Chouinard's glove and trickled into the net. The RoadRunners struck back at 8:43 as Adam Kostichka poked Shawn Snider's rebound past Munce to cut the deficit to 4-3. However, Joel Irving snuck another power play goal around Mike Mole in relief of Chouinard at 9:55 to extend Bakersfield's lead back to 5-3. Tiltgen brought back the RoadRunners to within one again at 5-4 when he tipped Cousineau's pass by Munce at 13:17, but Mike Hofstrand finished the scoring with a breakaway goal at 17:02 to make the final 6-4.
Bakersfield out-shot Phoenix 47-36. Chouinard stopped 28 shots in falling to 4-4-0 on the season. The RoadRunners went 1-6 on the power play.
