Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Like he had done in the playoffs last fall, Winnipeg Goldeyes third baseman Amos Ramon had a chance to be the hero Friday night in Fargo, but his high fly ball to centre field died at the warning track this time and the Goldeyes lost 3-1 to the host RedHawks.

Ramon started the game with a solo home run in the third inning for Winnipeg's only run of the game.

The RedHawks responded with a run in the bottom of the third inning when Tim Alberts singled in Zach Penprase, who reached on a walk.

Fargo added another run in the fifth inning, as Penprase, who reached on another walk, scored on a Nic Jackson double.

C.J. Retherford reached on an error to start the bottom of the sixth inning for the RedHawks and eventually scored on a double play to complete the scoring.

Winnipeg set the table for the comeback in the top of the ninth inning. After Josh Mazzola flew out, Casey Haerther drew a walk and Luis Alen singled. Tim Smith then struck out to bring up Ramon, whose drive to centre field fell a couple feet short of giving the Goldeyes the lead.

Mark Hardy posted another quality start by allowing just two earned runs in six innings of work, but suffered his first loss of the season.

Fargo starter Jake Laber nearly went the distance, going 8 2/3 innings for the win. Chase Johnson got Ramon to fly out for his sixth save of the season and third against the Goldeyes.

The Goldeyes and RedHawks meet again Saturday night in Fargo in the middle game of this three-game series. Winnipeg will send Justin Garcia (3-0, 3.38) to the hill against Fargo's Paul Burnside (0-3, 9.00). Coverage on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds begins at 4:30 p.m. with Around the Association.
