Canaries Power Past RailCats in Series Opener

GARY, Ind. - Tim Pahuta and Nate Bauman combined for eight hits, including two home runs, as Sioux Falls powered their way to an 8-3 win over the RailCats.

After the RailCats took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning, Pahuta pounded the second offering of the top of the sixth into the seats in right field to tie the game. With the bases loaded and one out, Jake Taylor lined a two-run single to center to give the Canaries the lead for good at 5-3.

RailCats starting pitcher Will Krout gave up a pair of singles in both the first and second inning but escaped without allowing any damage. In the third, Nick Van Stratten and Taylor reached on back-to-back errors to start the inning for Sioux Falls. Van Stratten scored on a groundout by J.P. Ramirez and Jared Clark followed with a run-scoring single to put the Canaries in front 2-0.

Canaries' starter Adam Champion served up an opportunity for the RailCats in the fourth. He walked back-to-back hitters and then Brian Kolb singled to load the bases. Drew Martinez worked a bases-loaded walk to bring home Craig Maddox and pull the 'Cats within 2-1. With the bases still full, Chase Tucker bounced into a double play to end the inning.

Gary played small ball and long ball in the fifth inning to take the lead. Danny Pulfer led off with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a groundout by Mike Massaro to tie the game. On the next pitch, Cristian Guerrero belted a solo shot to left-center, his second of the year and the RailCats first home run at U. S. Steel Yard in 2013.

Krout (1-2) allowed five runs, three earned in 5 =A8=F7 innings with no walks and a strikeout. Champion (2-1) did not allow a hit until the fourth inning; he surrendered three runs in five frames, walked six and struck out four.

Sioux Falls added three more runs over the final three frames against Taylor Sewitt. Sewitt hit Nick Van Stratten with a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth. In the ninth, Bauman crushed a two-run homer to make it 8-3.

Sewitt gave the rest of the RailCats bullpen a full night off dealing 3 =A8=F8 innings in relief of Krout. Sewitt allowed five hits and three runs. Matt Daly pitched a scoreless final inning and two-thirds for the Canaries to earn his first save.

RailCats pitching allowed a season-high 19 hits to Sioux Falls including two home runs. The series continues on Saturday night at 6:10. Left-hander Alain Quijano (3-1, 4.88) will pitch for the RailCats against Canaries right-hander Kyle Ruwe (2-2, 3.00). There will be a Yowie Rally Towel giveaway to the first 1,000 fans presented by First Midwest Bank.
