
Columbus Crew SC Selects Ryo Shimazaki in Round 3 of 2020 MLS SuperDraft

COLUMBUS - Columbus Crew SC today selected Virginia Commonwealth University defender Ryo Shimazaki with the seventh pick (59th overall) in Round 3 of the 2020 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, held this afternoon via conference call. The Black & Gold passed in Round 4 of the SuperDraft.
Shimazaki played four seasons at Virginia Commonwealth University, making 69 appearances (56 starts) while registering seven goals and six assists. During his time with VCU, the defender helped his team win the Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship (2018) while earning spots in the the All-Atlantic 10 First Team (2019) and the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team (2018). At the international level, Shimazaki was a member of the Japan Under-17 Men's National Team.
With today's selection in Round 3 of the SuperDraft, Crew SC has selected the following players in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft: University of San Diego forward Miguel Berry (seventh pick overall) in Round 1; Saint Mary's College goalkeeper Remi Prieur (47th pick overall) and Providence College midfielder Danny Griffin (49th pick overall) in Round 2; and Virginia Commonwealth University defender Ryo Shimazaki (59th overall pick) in Round 3. All four players are slated to join Crew SC in preseason as unsigned.
Crew SC's 2020 MLS preseason training begins on January 20 in Chula Vista, California, following entrance physicals and testing. From there, the club departs to Cancun, Mexico on January 29 before traveling to Tucson, Arizona on February 10 to participate in the 2020 Visit Tucson Sun Cup.
The Black & Gold begin the 2020 MLS regular season at MAPFRE Stadium against New York City FC, on Sunday, March 1 at 12:30 p.m. ET.
