Colorado Eagles News Release

Tuesday, October 26; Eagles Stretch Winning Streak to Four

TULSA, Okla. - The Colorado Eagles defeated the Tulsa Oilers, 4-1, extending their four-game winning streak and remaining perfect on the road this season. Riley Nelson led the offense with a goal and an assist, Kyle Jones was strong at the opposite end of the ice, stopping 18 of 19 Oilers shots and the Eagles penalty-killers went a perfect 5-for-5 on the night to propel the team to victory. In a fairly uneventful first 20 minutes of play, the Eagles and Oilers skated to a scoreless first period, with Colorado killing three Tulsa power plays. Goaltender Kyle Jones was strong in net to help keep the Oilers off the scoreboard, while Colorado edged Tulsa in shots, 7-6.

Colorado out-shot Tulsa 14-7 in the second period and out-scored them by that same 2:1 ratio. Kevin Ulanski got the game's first goal at 5:22 when his shot from the right faceoff dot was deflected past Tyler Sims. Riley Nelson picked up an assist on the play, giving him 600 points in his Eagles career.

The Oilers countered with a goal at 13:10 when Gary Steffes knocked home a loose puck on the doorstep after a play out of the left corner. Then, at 16:29, Scott May took a shot from above the left circle and had the rebound pushed past the Oilers' netminder. It appeared that rookie Matt Glasser touched the puck last as he crashed the crease; if the score gets changed, the tally would be Glasser's first professional goal.

Colorado played a complete final frame, killing consecutive Tulsa power plays in the first half of the period. Jones continued to make stellar saves in net, and at 16:57, Nelson scored an insurance goal from the right hashes to give the Eagles some breathing room.

The tally pushed the Eagles' captain's goal-scoring streak to six games (dating to last season) and kept alive his streak of recording at least two points in every game this season -- the only player in the league who can make such a claim. And with 63 seconds left on the clock, Daymen Rycroft added an empty-net goal (Colorado's third game in a row with one) to account for the final score.

Friday, October 29; Haddon Provides Last-Second Heroics

LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles defeated the Tulsa Oilers for the second time in four days, with a last-second, 2-1, win. The Oilers started out strong, and it took the Eagles until their final shot -- in the final second -- to overtake them in both shots and goals in the game. Steve Haddon provided both of Colorado's tallies on the night as the game's No. 1 Star.

The Oilers out-shot the Eagles 14-6 in the opening period, but each team was able to find the back of the net to end the first 20 minute of play deadlocked at 1. Chad Costello opened the scoring for Tulsa at 17:24 when he broke down the right wing and beat Andrew Penner with a low shot from deep in the right circle. But it took Colorado just 14 seconds to counter when Haddon beat Tyler Sims with a one-timer from the slot off a feed from Kevin Ulanski along the left-wing boards.

The Eagles crept closer in shots in the second stanza (out-shooting the Oilers 13-8), but neither team scored in a period filled with ebbs and flows from penalties. The closest either team came to a tally was when Adam Hogg had a goal waived off at 11:09 by referee Mike Weigart.

Colorado continued to climb back into the game, and it took them until the final second to overtake Tulsa. Midway through the third period the Eagles were forced to kill a 5-minute major penalty in addition to a full two minutes of 5-on-3 play in the middle of it. The successful kill propelled them -- along with the emphatic approval from the sold-out building -- to a final burst that won the game.

With just seconds left on the clock, the Eagles forced a turnover as the Oilers tried to leave their defensive zone, leading to the possession that won the game for Colorado. With the clock ticking to zero, Haddon was able to chip in a rebound from the doorstep for the winner.

The Eagles will have a full week off before traveling to Dayton, Ohio on Nov. 5 for their first game against a former-IHL team (the Dayton Gems).

The Week Ahead

Friday, Nov. 5 & Saturday, Nov. 6; Eagles Battle Gems in First Meeting Against New Teams The Eagles will take on each of the former IHL teams this season, and their first of such meetings will come this weekend when they travel to Dayton, Ohio to take on the Gems; This will be their only games against the Gems this season. Dayton enters the week two points behind Colorado with a record of 4-1-0 (8 points) -- their only loss coming against Rapid City. Former-Eagle Brett Lutes is tied for third on the team in points with five (2-3-5).

Notable Numbers

EARLY BURST - After several lapses led to an opening-day loss, the Eagles have adjusted nicely, winning every game since. Their five-game winning streak is the longest active streak in the league and has them sitting atop the Turner Conference with 10 points (5-1-0). Entering the week, their .833 winning percentage leads the CHL.

HOME PRODUCTION - The Eagles' last-second score against Tulsa on Friday night was more than just a thrilling game-winner, it was also the team's 1,000th regular season goal at the Budweiser Events Center (in 226 total games). Of those 1,000 scores at home, 101 have come at the expense of the Oilers, more than any other active CHL team (through 21 contests). To put the overall numbers in perspective, the Eagles have averaged 4.42 goals-per-game at home, while scoring 780 in 224 road games for an average of 3.48 goals-per-game.

ONE DOOR CLOSES, ANOTHER OPENS - Riley Nelson's six-game goal streak -- tied for the third-longest in franchise history -- came to an end Friday night, but he's still riding another streak that will end up in the team's record books. Dating back to last season, Nelson is on an eight-game assist streak -- which also ties for the third-longest in franchise history. The constantly-consistent captain had registered multiple points in each game this season before Friday night, and leads the team in points with 12 (5-7-12).

BETTER THAN ADVERTISED - The Eagles' penalty-kill ranks 13th in the CHL, but has been hot recently. It was perfect last week in a pair of games against the Oilers, killing 11-of-11 Tulsa power plays. Its biggest kill -- a 5-minute major with a full two minutes of 5-on-3 play midway through the third period Friday -- helped propel the team to its last-second win. Colorado has killed 21-of-26 penalties on the year (80.8%).

JUST FOR FUN - Steve Haddon -- Friday night's hero with both Colorado goals in a 2-1 win -- has a history of producing when given the chance on a top line, and through six games this season, he's proving that again. The 5th-year Eagle has posted increasingly better numbers each season, and if his stats from the first six games of the year were extrapolated, he'd crush his previous highs. His current stats, multiplied by 11 (to get to 66 games), would project to: 44 goals, 33 assists, 77 points, +88 plus/minus and 22 game-winning goals...all without having a single special teams point.

WHOSE HAUS...OUR HAUS - A pair of local products put on an Eagles jersey in the same game for the first time last Friday. A.J. Hau came off the 10-day IR, joining his older brother, Chris Hau, on the active roster. The Haus are the second set of brothers to appear in the same game for the Eagles (Andrew & Alex Penner were the first last season). The only other local player to suit up for the Eagles was Lee Arnold (2003-04 -> 2006-07); all three came up through the Northern Colorado Youth Hockey system.
