Mississippi RiverKings News Release
RIVERKINGS RECAP: The Mississippi RiverKings split their weekend of games last week, as they traveled to Missouri Friday to complete a home-and-home series with the Mavericks, then returned home to face the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees for the only time this season on Saturday night. Friday, Mississippi completed the sweep of the back-to-back games with the Mavericks in a 5-2 slug-fest that included 300 penalty minutes between the teams, most of which came in the game's final two minutes. Kyle McNulty (1-1-0) won his first game of the season in goal for the RiverKings with a 21-save performance. Offensively, goals were scored by Russell Smith, Louis Dumont, Matt Summers, Nathan Lutz, and Derek Landmesser. Matt Boyd and Darrell Stoddard each added a pair of assists. Saturday, Juliano Pagliero stopped 40 RiverKings' shots in a 2-0 victory for the Killer Bees. McNulty stopped 35 shots for the RiverKings, but RGV goals were scored by Brett Wilson and Aaron Lee.
KAMINSKI AT 250: Friday's win over Missouri marked Mississippi RiverKings' coach Kevin "Killer" Kaminski's 250th career professional coaching victory. In 527 games, the third-year Mississippi coach has a record of 250-234-43 in his pro coaching career.
OPPOSING VIEWPOINTS: Two long-time CHL challengers return to the DeSoto Civic Center for games this weekend against the RiverKings. Mississippi hosts Bossier-Shreveport for the second time this season on Friday, November 5th, and Tulsa on Saturday, November 6th. Both games begin at 7:05 PM. Bossier-Shreveport won their second game of the year against Mississippi on October 16th with a 2-1 victory, while Saturday's game will be the first meeting between the RiverKings and Oilers this season. All three teams made the move to the new Berry Conference this season, after being long-time Northeast Division and Northern Conference rivals over the past several years. Tulsa and the RiverKings are two of the remaining three originial franchises from the re-birth of the Central Hockey League in 1992.
RIVERKINGS POWER PLAY: Mississippi was stopped on the power play for the first time this season Saturday, as the RiverKings finished 0-for-6 on the power play. That marked the first time since late last season that Mississippi had been held scoreless with the man advantage, as the RiverKings last took a zero on the power play on March 19th in a 6-4 victory over Tulsa in the team's next-to-last game of the regular season. In Friday's victory at Missouri, Mississippi finished 1-for-9 with the extra man. Entering the week, the RiverKings rank ninth in the Central Hockey League for power play percentage at 15.9% (7-of-44).
RIVERKINGS PENALTY KILL: Mississippi continues to see its penalty kill percentage improve after a shaky start to the season. The RiverKings allowed one power play goal by Missouri on Friday night (1-for-5), but stopped Rio Grande Valley in all five of their chances Saturday night (0-for-5). For the season, Mississippi ranks 14th in the CHL for penalty-killing at 79.5%. Saturday's blanking of Rio Grande Valley on the power play marked the second time this season opponents have failed to score with the man advantage, as Bossier-Shreveport failed to score on the power play in their 2-1 win October 16th in Mississippi.
SHOTS IN THE DARK: Mississippi ranks third in the Central Hockey League for shots allowed per game at 28.00, while the RiverKings enter the week seventh in the CHL for shots taken per game at 32.33. Saturday's 40 shots on goal taken against Rio Grande Valley marked the most number of shots taken in a game by the RiverKings and the 37 shots allowed to the Killer Bees were the most by an opponent this year.
SCORING LEADERS: No one on the Mississippi roster is averaging a point or more a game, but five players lead the team with four points each through six games of the regular season. They are Chris Richards, Nathan Lutz, Derek Landmesser, Matt Boyd, and Matt Miller. Richards and Lutz each have scored two goals apiece, and Boyd and Miller each have four helpers to their credit. Both of Richards' two goals have come on the power play.
IN A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN: Entering this week's play, Matt Boyd's four assists leads all CHL rookies in that category. He's also second among rookies in penalty minutes with 21. Tyler Sheldrake is tied for first among CHL defensemen for major penalties with four. As a team, Mississippi's 306 penalty minutes leads the league, as does its 51.00 average PIMS per game. The RiverKings also lead the CHL in game misconducts with ten and shorthanded goals allowed with five. With penalty minutes in all six of the team's games, Darrell Stoddard is tied with former RiverKing Adam Smyth (now with Arizona) for the longest streak of that type in the CHL. Kyle McNulty's 17 saves in the third period of Saturday's loss to Rio Grande Valley were the most saves in the third period of a CHL game this season.
INJURED RESERVE: Defenseman Milan Maslonka was placed on 10-day injured reserve at the start of the season October 15th and has not seen action this year.
NEED SOME HOME COOKING: Saturday's game was the first of four contests at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southave for Mississippi. The homestand continues this weekend with home games against Bossier-Shreveport Friday night at 7:05 PM and Tulsa Saturday night at 7:05 PM. Mississippi will have one more home game Tuesday, November 9th against Evansville before the first extended road trip begins for the RiverKings. That road trip will have Mississippi play at Rapid City on Friday, November 12th, at Colorado Saturday November 13th, and back to Rapid City on Tuesday, November 16th.
