Coles and Ramon Win It in the Ninth

Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Winnipeg Goldeyes starter Todd Privett did everything he was asked on Wednesday night. However, once again, the bullpen just couldn't finish the job.

Fortunately, he had Mike Coles and Amos Ramon on his side.

On a beautiful Wednesday evening at Shaw Park, the night after Matt Rusch pitched the first complete game of 2012 season for the Goldeyes, Privett went 8.1 innings and left the game with his team ahead of the Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants 2-0. However, Sioux Falls scored twice in the top of the ninth to tie it at 2-2.

But in the bottom of the ninth, Coles singled, hustled to second by tagging up on a fly out by Josh Mazzola and then scored on a single by Ramon to give the Goldeyes a thrilling walk-off 3-2 win.

With the victory, the Goldeyes won their third straight game, swept Sioux Falls out of Shaw Park, improved to 45-31 on the season and pulled four games ahead of Kansas City in the American Association Wild Card race.

"Todd Privett was awesome tonight," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "He gave us everything he had tonight. He pitched a helluva ball game."

The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the third as Kyle Day singled, went to second on a walk to Ramon and scored on a single by Price Kendall.

The Fish made it 2-0 in the fifth when Josh Mazzola hit a solo homer, his team-leading 16th of the year. He also drove in his team-leading 60th run and it appeared as if the Fish had all they would need.

However, the Goldeyes bullpen sure made it exciting in the ninth. After Privett gave up a double to Cesar Nicolas, Forney went to reliever Griffin Bailey. Bailey gave up a single to Cristian Guerrero, struck out Trevor Lawhorn and then, on a 3-2 count gave up an infield single to Jake Taylor that scored Nicolas from third. With runners on the corners, Chris Allen came in and gave up a single to Al Quintana that sent home Guerrero with the tying run.

However, in the bottom of the ninth, Coles had a great at bat and slapped a single up the middle. Tagged up on the flyout by Mazzola and beat the throw to second and then scored on Ramon's single, the result of another terrific at bat.

"Amos got the game-winning hit but Mike Coles won that game for us," said Forney. "First, he had the great at bat then he made that hustle play to get to second and while he was on second base, he was moving back and forth and he really upset their pitcher.

"Mike Coles is a difference maker for us right now. He's out there making it happen."

Allen (5-5, 3.27 ERA) got the win for Winnipeg while reliever Alan DeRatt (3-6, 5.47 ERA) suffered the loss for Sioux Falls.

Thursday night the Goldeyes will open a three-game series with the Wichita Wingnuts. Game time is 7 p.m. at Shaw Park and it can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play.
