New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
AKRON, OH - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats never got any offense going Thursday night, amassing only one hit in a 3-0 shutout loss to the Akron RubberDucks at Canal Park.
The Fisher Cats (27-32) fell for the second time in as many days and lost the series after winning the first game 9-1. The RubberDucks (28-30) reaped the benefits of a complete-game shutout by starter Will Roberts (W, 5-2), who gave up only one hit and one walk in his outing.
After a lengthy rain delay, the game began at 6:56. Akron opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first. Erik Gonzalez laced a two-out single to left off Fisher Cats starter Taylor Cole (L, 2-6), bringing up Anthony Gallas. The Akron right fielder blasted a two-run homer to left, putting Akron ahead 2-0. It was Gallas' third homer of the series.
The RubberDucks tacked on one more in improbable fashion in the bottom of the eighth, with reliever Danny Barnes pitching. Leadoff man Justin Toole reached on an error by shortstop Jorge Flores, and consecutive singles by Todd Hankins and Jordan Smith loaded the bases. Gonzalez lofted a soft pop fly to shallow right that fell between Jon Berti and Ryan Schimpf, allowing Toole to score and making it 3-0 in favor of the hosts.
Cole allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings, fanning five and taking the hard-luck loss. Barnes gave up an unearned run in his only inning of action, surrendering three hits.
The Fisher Cats will open up a three-game series against the Altoona Curve from Peoples Natural Gas Field in Altoona. Joel Piñeiro will be on the hill for New Hampshire against Altoona righty Chad Kuhl on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Radio coverage will begin at 6:45 with Ben Gellman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and at www.nhfishercats.com.
The Fisher Cats will return home on June 19th to face Binghamton at 7:05 p.m. on an Atlas Fireworks night, with a Family Sleepover and Scout Night! Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com or by calling the ticket office at (603)-641-2005.
