Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BOWIE, MD - Luis Cessa fired six scoreless innings while Josh and Aderlin Rodriguez each launched home runs to push the Binghamton Mets past the Bowie Baysox, 6-0, on Thursday night at Prince George's Stadium. The B-Mets' shutout victory in the rubber match ended a four-series losing streak and snapped a stretch of eight-straight winless series.
Binghamton's big offensive night started with a blast in the second. After Major League rehabber Kevin Gausman retired the first five batters he faced, Aderlin Rodriguez crushed the first pitch he saw into the woods beyond the left-field wall to put the B-Mets on the board.
Two innings later, another Rodriguez took Gausman deep. Following consecutive singles from Michael Conforto and Brock Peterson, Josh Rodriguez ripped Gausman's 3-1 pitch inside the left-field foul pole for his league-leading 11th home run of the season.
Peterson tacked on against reliever Marcel Prado in the fifth. With runners at the corners, the B-Mets designated hitter laced a two-run double down the right-field line, kicking Binghamton's lead to six.
The offensive push was more than enough for Cessa. The right-hander surrendered two hits in the first three batters he faced before retiring 14 of the next 15 Baysox hitters. Cessa needed just 80 pitches to cruise through six scoreless innings, facing four or fewer batters in his final five frames.
Beck Wheeler struck out two in scoreless seventh and worked around a leadoff double in a blank eighth. Paul Sewald side-stepped a single in the ninth to close Binghamton's fifth shutout win of the season.
Cessa (5-4) posted his third consecutive quality start to garner his team-leading fifth win of the season. The righty has allowed one run over his last three starts spanning 19-2/3 innings. Gausman (0-1) surrendered four runs on four hits in the loss.
The B-Mets (29-30) return home to open a three-game series against the first-place New Britain Rock Cats on Friday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Michael Fulmer takes the mound against RHP Shane Carle. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
