Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, KY - The Hot Rods would attempt to answer Quad Cities' offensive prowess Thursday night, but would come up short in that effort falling to the River Bandits 8-7. A combined five home runs were smacked between the two clubs.

Quad Cities picked up right where they left off Wednesday night in the offensive column. Facing Hot Rods starter Alexander Colome, Luis Mateo smashed a home run over the centerfield fence in the first at bat of the ball game. After two straight strikeouts by Colome, Matt Adams hit the first pitch he saw over the right-center field fence at Bowling Green Ballpark. A batter later, Frederick Parejo laced a line drive home run into the Hot Rods bullpen in left field.

The Hot Rods would answer back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the first. After Robi Estrada singled, Brett Nommensen would bloop a double into "no man's land" down the left field line. This put runners at second and third for Ryan Wiegand, who knocked a line drive into left field for an RBI single. That would be it for the Hot Rods in the inning though. With Brett Nommensen at third, Gabe Cohen would hit into an inning ending double play.

The River Bandits would flex their offensive muscles once again in the top of the second. After a Rainel Rosario hit by pitch and a Mateo walk, Devin Goodwin lifted a soft single into shallow left field that scored Rosario. One batter later, Alan Ahmady singled home Mateo to make the score 5-1 River Bandits.

The Hot Rods would look to make it a brand new ballgame in the bottom of the fifth. Quad Cities starter Joe Kelly would help the Hot Rods by walking the first two men of the inning. A new pitcher, Matt Blazek, would not help the River Bandits sudden pitching struggles either. Blazek would walk Estrada to load the bases, and Brett Nommensen would bring in a run on a sacrifice fly to left. A batter later, Wiegand brought the crowd at Bowling Green Ballpark to their feet with a game-tying, three-run home run over the right field fence.

Bowling Green would give the lead back to Quad Cities immediately. In the top of the sixth, Hot Rods reliever Jake Sullivan would walk the leadoff man Ted Obregon, and Mateo would triple to the gap in left-center field scoring Obregon. Mateo would scamper home two batters later on an Ahmady RBI single to make the score 7-5 in favor of Quad Cities.

After a C.J. Beatty solo home run in the top of the seventh, the Hot Rods would attempt to start the comeback campaign in the bottom of the eighth. Wiegand walked to begin the inning, and, for the first time as a Hot Rod, Gabe Cohen smacked a home run the opposite way to right field cutting the deficit to 8-7.

That would be it for Bowling Green, though. Kyle Spraker was stranded at third in the bottom of the eighth, and the team would go down one, two, three in the bottom of the ninth. Aaron Terry came on to pick up his twelfth save of the season.

The Hot Rods will finish their three game series with Quad Cities on Friday night at 7:05 PM at Bowling Green Ballpark. It's another Fireworks Extravaganza presented by WBKO at the ballpark with fireworks immediately following the game. Hot Rods General Manager Brad Taylor has guaranteed that his team will win Friday night. If the Hot Rods unfortunately lose, fans in attendance will be able to redeem their ticket stub for a half price ticket to select dates later in the season.

Friday night's game will send LHP Kyle Lobstein (6-5, 4.39) to the mound for Bowling Green, while Quad Cities will test the arm of Eric Fornataro (7-8, 4.26). For ticket information log on to www.bghotrods.com, call the Hot Rods Ticket Office at (270) 901-2121 or stop by Bowling Green Ballpark.
