South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - South Bend starting pitcher Andrew Wolcott and three other hurlers in the current rotation didn't begin the season with the Silver Hawks. If South Bend is to make a playoff push, however, Wolcott and the others will need to throw as he did Thursday night in an 8-3 victory over Beloit.

Wolcott (WP, 1-2) had easily his best outing in a Silver Hawks uniform, tossing 7.0 innings while allowing one run on four hits and striking out four. Aside from a lone Snapper tally in the fifth on a RBI single by Derek McCallum, Wolcott cruised through his innings of work before turning it over to the bullpen to close out the victory.

The game was close through six innings, as a Bobby Borchering RBI single in the third and Ramon Castillo home run off Nelvin Fuentes (LP, 0-1) in the sixth gave the Silver Hawks a 2-1 advantage. South Bend scored four runs in the seventh, however, to secure the victory.

Bobby Borchering's single with one out in the seventh was followed by a Matt Davidson walk and Castillo fly out to put runners on first and second with two outs. Catcher Tyson Van Winkle worked a full count for the fourth consecutive at bat before singling home Borchering and extending the lead to 3-1. Matt Helm then put the game out of reach by crushing the first pitch he saw well over the left field wall for his second home run of the season and a 6-1 Silver Hawk advantage.

Van Winkle and Helm added RBI singles in the eighth as insurance. Helm recorded four RBIs on the evening, the third time he has done so this season. South Bend scored at least eight runs for the first time since June 19th in game one of a double header against Fort Wayne.

David Nick went 0-for-5 to end his personal-best nine game hitting streak. Kevin Munson (ND) extended his scoreless inning streak to 3.0 by throwing a blank eighth, and he has not yet allowed a run in his professional career. Rafael Quezada (ND) struggled in the ninth before Yonata Ortega (SV, 20) struck Aaron Hicks with the bases loaded to earn the save and give South Bend the win.

The Silver Hawks will attempt to win the three-game series against the Beloit Snappers (Minnesota Twins) on a Fireworks Friday night at 7:30 PM. RHP Scottie Allen (3-3, 5.02 ERA) will take the mound for South Bend while Beloit sends RHP Jhon Garcia to the hill (0-2, 3.51 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com .
