
Kernels Defeat Dragons 8-1

Dayton, Ohio-Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Garrett Richards fired six scoreless innings, striking out eight and allowing just two hits, as the Kernels defeated the Dayton Dragons 8-1 before a crowd of 8,070 at Fifth Third Third. The Kernels have won the first two games of the series.
Richards did not allow a runner past first base over his six innings. He did not issue a walk while retiring 18 of the 20 batters he faced.
The Kernels enjoyed a big third inning against Dragons starting pitcher Justin Walker to take a commanding lead. They scored five runs in the inning, keyed by a two-run home run by Casey Haerther, to take a 5-0 lead. In the fourth, Carlos Ramirez hit a two-run homer against Walker to make it 7-0. The Kernels score one run against Dayton reliever Junior Martinez in the fifth to jump ahead 8-0.
The Dragons scored their only run in the eighth when Frank Pfister doubled with one out and scored on Chase Weems' RBI single.
Walker (3-9) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits in four innings. He walked one and struck out two.
Dayton finished with five hits by five different players. Pfister's double was the only extra base hit.
The Dragons (8-17) battle the Kernels (15-10) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the finale of the three-game set. Tim Crabbe (2-1, 2.70) will start for Dayton against Tyler Skaggs (7-4, 3.84). The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Channel 23 on most Time Warner Cable systems). Former Reds Rookie of the Year Tommy Helms, the second baseman on the 1970 National League pennant winners, will provide color commentary.
