FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Jonathan Galvez hit three home runs while RHP Matt Lollis picked up the win in his TinCaps debut as Fort Wayne topped the Peoria Chiefs, 8-3, Thursday at Parkview Field.
It was the first three-homer game for a Fort Wayne player since Jon Benick turned the trick on July 3, 2002. It's the second such feat in the Midwest League this year.
Oddly enough, Peoria snagged its only lead of the night on a Galvez error. In the top of the second, Jonathan Mota roped a two-out double into the left-field corner. Jae-Hoon Ha sent a roller toward second base, where Galvez fielded and threw wildly to first, allowing Mota to make it 1-0.
In the bottom of the second, Galvez hit a high drive over the left-field wall for a three-run shot, putting Fort Wayne ahead, 3-1.
Peoria tied the game in the top of the third on D.J. Fitzgerald's RBI single, but another Galvez homer in the bottom of the fourth put the TinCaps back in front, 4-3.
In the sixth, Galvez came up again and smoked a fastball over the wall for his third round-tripper of the night, propelling the TinCaps to a 5-3 advantage.
Edinson Rincon drove in a pair with a check-swing single to left in the bottom of the seventh. In the eighth, Jason Hagerty bounced a two-out RBI single to right to finish the scoring at 8-3.
Jedd Gyorko doubled twice in a 2-for-4 night.
Meanwhile, Lollis allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits in five innings of work. He walked two and struck out a pair. Three Fort Wayne relievers combined on four scoreless innings.
Lollis (1-0) was the winning pitcher, handing Peoria RHP Ryan Searle (4-5) the loss.
Fort Wayne evened its record to 13-13 in the half, 49-47 for the season. Peoria fell to 10-14 in the second half, 48-45 for the year.
The TinCaps and Chiefs (Class-A Chicago Cubs) finish the three-game series Friday at Parkview Field at 7:05 p.m. Fort Wayne LHP Mike Watt (4-4) makes the start against Peoria RHP Rob Whitenack (8-7).
