Clutch Hager, Powerful Glaesmann Even Series
June 29, 2012 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (4-4, 42-36) slugged 17 hits on their way to a convincing 12-1 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (4-4, 51-26) on Friday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. Jake Hager tied a franchise record with five hits and also drove in five runs. Todd Glaesmann also added his tenth and eleventh home runs of the season. Roberto Gomez evened the series at one game apiece, earning his eighth win in six, strong innings.
Hager becomes the third player in franchise history to record five hits in one game. All three times have occurred during the 2012 season with Todd Glaesmann and Ryan Brett both accomplishing the feat in May. On Friday's historic night, Hager's five hits all came with runners in scoring position. The 19-year-old shortstop drove in five runs and struck three doubles along the way.
In the bottom of the third, Hager put the Hot Rods on the scoreboard first when he singled home Brett from second base. Then in the bottom of the fifth after Tyler Goeddel walked and Brett singled, Hager doubled into the gap in right-centerfield to clear the bases to put the Hot Rods ahead 3-0.
After the Lugnuts tallied a run to make it 3-1, Glaesmann homered off of the foul pole in left field on the first pitch of the bottom of the sixth. Two batters later, Alejandro Segovia drilled a homer to left field to break the game open. At the end of six innings, the Hot Rods led 6-1.
Bowling Green then scored three runs in each of the next two innings. Hager added two more RBI's, and Glaesmann smashed a two-run home run to the second tier of the Home Run Grill in left field. The two-homer night for Glaesmann places him in the Eastern Division lead and alone in second place in the entire Midwest League.
Not to be overshadowed by a historic offensive night, Roberto Gomez did not allow an earned run in six frames to earn his eighth win of the season. Since May 11, Gomez is 7-1 with a 1.44 ERA and stands now in a second place tie for the Midwest League lead in wins.
The rubber match between the two teams takes place on Saturday night at 7:05 PM from Bowling Green Ballpark in downtown Bowling Green, Kentucky. In a battle of All-Star lefties, the Hot Rods will send LHP Felipe Rivero (6-6, 2.38) to the mound, while the Lugnuts will counter with LHP Justin Nicolino (3-0, 1.42). Tune in to the game on 1340-AM "The Ticket" and online at 1340wbgn.com. The Forever Communications Pregame Show with Hank Fuerst begins at 6:45 PM.
