Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - A five-run third inning was the beginning of the end for the Burlington Bees on Friday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark as the Kane County Cougars ran off with an 8-1 victory.
Tim Ferguson began the third-inning rally by doubling over third. He ended up at third after a base hit by Justin Trapp. Jack Lopez punched a single into right-center field that Bobby Crocker mishandled. Ferguson crossed the dish on the hit while Trapp scored on the Crocker mishap to make it a 2-0 lead for the Cougars (39-39, 5-3).
Jorge Bonifacio was hit by a pitch to continue the threat against Drew Granier (9-4) while Alex Llanos singled home Lopez. Bonifacio came home on a wild pitch from Granier while a knock from Kenny Swab allowed Llanos to touch the plate, capping a five-run frame. Kane County picked up another pair in the fourth on a two-run double from Michael Antonio to draw Trapp and Yowill Espinal to the dish.
Kyle Smith benefitted from all the offense but only lasted four innings while blanking the Bees (37-40, 5-3) on four hits. Andrew Triggs (1-0) relieved Smith in the fifth and worked the final five innings while giving up just one run. Triggs fanned five and coughed up five hits. Antonio tallied another RBI as he drove home Lopez with a single in the sixth to finish the scoring.
