Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

DAVENPORT, Iowa - The Kernels offense was held scoreless as the Quad Cities River Bandits blanked Cedar Rapids 1-0 on Thursday night at Modern Woodmen Park.

Austin Wood (3-7) took an unfortunate loss for the second straight ballgame. He allowed only one run on four hits while striking out three and walking four. He also took the loss vs. Beloit in his last start on June 23 when the Snappers won 1-0. Quad Cities scored the only run of the ballgame in the 4th inning on Luis Mateo's RBI single that plated Anthony Garcia.

The Kernels had solid opportunities to score in the 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th innings. Abel Baker led off the 3rd inning, but three consecutive groundouts ended the frame. In the 5th inning Zach Borenstein singled to lead off, but no runs came home. The best opportunity came in the 7th inning after Andy Workman led off with a double down the left field line. He was standing at 3rd base with one out after a Frazier Hall fly out, but a strikeout and fly to center ended the threat. In the 9th inning Alex Yarbrough singled with one out and Frazier Hall singled with two outs, but Gary Mitchell struck out to end the game.

The Kernels struck out 11 times on the night, and Quad Cities pitching issued no walks. Sam Gaviglio (4-5) went seven innings for the win. He allowed only four hits while striking out eight. Ricky Martinez pitched a 1-2-3 8th inning, and Heath Wyatt picked up his 12th save by pitching the 9th inning.

Mike Johnson went one inning in relief for Cedar Rapids, allowing two hits while striking out one. Carmine Giardina pitched one inning, allowing no hits while walking one and striking out one.

The Kernels continue the series at Quad Cities on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. The team returns home on July 4 at 5:05 p.m. vs. Wisconsin!
