Hawks Thump Dragons, Win Second Straight

The South Bend Silver Hawks (40-38, 5-3) throttled the Dayton Dragons for the second consecutive night, earning a 9-3 win Friday night in front of 4,450 fans at Coveleski Stadium. With a win Saturday the Silver Hawks can sweep their first series since the third week of April.

The Silver Hawks erupted for three runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth inning. In the two innings combined, the Hawks notched nine hits and sent 17 men to plate, including 10 in the sixth. All the runs were charged to right-hander Erik Miller, who allowed eight earned runs on seven hits over an inning.

John Pedrotty (5-5) earned the win for South Bend, allowing three earned runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings. The left-hander walked three and did not strike anybody out. Miller (0-3) took the loss for Dayton and saw his ERA climb to 14.18.

The Silver Hawks recorded at least one hit from all nine starters, including two-hit performances from Fidel Pena, Eric Groff, Kerry Jenkins and Raul Navarro. Tom Belza extended his team-leading active hitting streak to nine games with a 1-for-3 showing.

The Dragons scored single runs in the second and fifth innings to claim an early 2-0 lead. Radhames Quezada started for the Dragons and did not factor in the decision, hurling four scoreless innings of one-hit baseball. The Silver Hawks have managed just one run against Quezada in 15 total innings this season.

The Hawks took their first lead with a three-run fifth inning that included an RBI single from Navarro and an RBI triple from Pena. Ryan Court started the five-run sixth inning with a double and scored on an RBI double from Groff. After an RBI single from Jenkins and an RBI ground out from Chris Ellison, Belza capped off the inning with a two-RBI single.

The Silver Hawks have outscored Dayton 21-7 through the first two games of the series and have 29 combined hits.

Willy Paredes tossed the final 2.1 innings scoreless and allowedÂ- just one base runner.

The Silver Hawks and Dragons conclude the three-game series Saturday at Coveleski Stadium. Jesse Darrah (5-4, 4.34) starts for South Bend and he will be opposed by Tanner Robles (4-5, 4.56).
