DURHAM, NC - Behind a pair of run scoring singles, the Durham Bulls defeated the Pawtucket Red Sox 5-3 to clinch a series win in front of 10,069 fans Saturday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Red Sox opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, with a leadoff home run by Rusney Castillo. Later in the frame, Mike Ohlman singled to left. Following a line out by Jordan Betts, Aneury Tavarez lined a single to right-center moving Ohlman to third base. The PawSox executed a double steal, and Tavarez beat the throw to second and Ohlman scored from third extending their lead to 2-0.
Justin Williams doubled off the Blue Monster with one out in the home half of the fourth, and later scored on a double to right by Brandon Snyder cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Behind five hits, the home team scored three runs in the seventh. Jason Coats singled to left, Jeremy Hazelbaker reached on a bunt single and Nick Ciuffo, in his Triple-A debut, drove in a run with a line drive to right to tie the game at two. Andrew Velazquez followed with an RBI single to make it a 3-2 game, and Kean Wong followed with an RBI single of his own to put the Bulls ahead by a pair of runs.
Ciuffo followed Snyder's second double with an RBI single in the eighth inning extending the lead to 5-2. He finished 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Andrew Moore made his second start with the Bulls, tossing 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, with three walks and five strikeouts. Colin Poche (W, 3-0) was brought on in relief and earned his third win of the season by tossing 1.2 scoreless frames.
Andrew Kittredge (S, 1) dealt the final 1.2 innings, allowing the PawSox to cut the lead to 5-3, but a ground out to second with the tying run on base ended the threat and gave the Bull City a victory for the second consecutive night.
The Bulls and PawSox face off in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday evening at 5 p.m. Durham looks to end the six-game homestand on a high note and finish off a three-game sweep on Touch A Truck and First Responders Night at the DBAP.
