Syracuse, NY - The Chiefs managed a lone walk from the plate as Columbus Clippers staring pitcher Adam Plutko threw a no-hitter en route to a 6-0 Columbus win over Syracuse on Saturday night in front of a packed crowd of 9,296 at NBT Bank Stadium. Plutko was perfect through eight and one-third innings, but walked Bengie Gonzalez with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to end the bid for a perfect game.
Columbus (25-28) broke into the scoring column in the top of the third inning. Eric Haase and Nellie Rodriguez both singled to put runners on first and third base. Eric Stamets followed with a single that scored Haase for a 1-0 Clippers lead. Yandy Diaz then singled to load the bases. Three batters later, Brandon Barnes doubled home Rodriguez and Stamets to give Columbus a 3-0 edge.
The Clippers extended their lead in the fourth. With one out, Haase doubled. Rodriguez followed with a single, scoring Haase to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
Columbus added another run in the fifth. Brandon Guyer led off with a single. After a Lonnie Chisenhall strikeout, Barnes singled, putting runners on first and second. Yu Chang then struck out, but Francisco Mejia single to bring home Guyer to push the Columbus lead to 5-0.
The Clippers added to the lead in the ninth. With one out Guyer was hit by a pitch and Chisenhall singled to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Chang singled to score Guyer and push the margin to 6-0.
Syracuse (26-27) was stymied by Plutko throughout the game. The 26-year-old struck out eight batters during the no-hitter while throwing a season-high 112 pitches, including 80 strikes.
