Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

DURHAM, N.C. - Pawtucket Red Sox right-hander Chandler Shepherd delivered yet another sharp start, but the Durham Bulls came from behind to top the PawSox, 5-3, on Saturday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Pawtucket (24-29) climbed ahead 2-0 in the fourth inning, but the Bulls (31-23) scored the next five runs to win for the second straight night to begin the three-game weekend series. The PawSox scored a run in the ninth and had the tying run aboard, but Durham clamped down the victory.

After dealing seven innings of one-run work his last time out on Monday, Shepherd allowed just one run over six innings in which he gave up four hits, didn?t walk a Bulls batter and struck out four. Shepherd, who made the transition from reliever to starter in the offseason, notched a 2.22 ERA in his five starts in the month of May.

PawSox designated hitter Adam Lind made his Red Sox organizational debut after he was signed to a minor-league contract Tuesday. Lind, who has hit 200 career MLB homers over 12 big-league seasons, most notably with Toronto, served as the designated hitter, batted out of the cleanup spot and went 0-for-4 with a strikeout, a couple groundouts and a flyout to left-center field.

Rehabbing Red Sox reliever Austin Maddox (L, 1-1), who had his rehab assignment transferred back to Pawtucket from Double-A Portland, took over for the seventh and allowed three runs on a walk and five singles. Right-hander Brandon Workman then entered and proceeded to strike out the three batters he faced with the bases loaded to limit the damage and keep Pawtucket within striking distance.

Bulls starter Andrew Moore yielded two runs on four hits and a trio of walks over 5.2 innings. Reliever Colin Poche (W, 3-0) struck out three in 1.2 innings, and right-hander Andrew Kittredge (S, 1) allowed a run in the ninth but secure the victory.

Pawtucket jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when center fielder Rusney Castillo vaulted an opposite-field solo homer and tucked it inside the right-field foul pole to lead off the frame. Later in the inning with runners at the corners, left fielder Aneury Tavarez took off for second and drew a throw all the way through from Durham's catcher, which allowed first baseman Mike Ohlman (2-for-3, 2 R, BB) to score from third and make it 2-0.

Durham third baseman Brandon Snyder tagged an opposite-field RBI double off the right-field wall in the home half of the fourth to cut Pawtucket's lead to 2-1.

The Bulls loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning against Maddox, and catcher Nick Ciuffo, second baseman Andrew Velazquez and left fielder Kean Wong delivered three consecutive RBI singles to push the Bulls in front 4-2.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Ciuffo smacked an RBI single into the right-center gap to stretch Durham's advantage to 5-2.

In the ninth, Pawtucket second baseman Mike Miller drilled an RBI single toward second that plated Ohlman and brought the PawSox within two.
