Washington Wild Things News Release

NORMAL, Ill -Chris Smith pitched a complete game shutout as the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, topped the Normal Cornbelters 3-0 Wednesday night.

The win was the Wild Things eighth in their last 11 games and also secured their fourth straight series victory.

Michael Bando hit a solo shot in the third inning to give the Wild Things an early lead, and the lone run looked as if it would be the difference in the game until the ninth.

Bando's home run, his first of the year, led off the third inning. He smoked a 2-1 pitch from Normal starter Jacob Liedka over the fence in right-center to give the Wild Things a lead that they would never relinquish.

Chris Smith was dominant on the mound for the Wild Things, striking out seven and scattering four hits for his second complete game of the season. Smith's first complete game also came against the CornBelters back on June 8.

The right-hander's record now improves to 8-4 on the season.

In the top of the ninth, the Wild Things tacked on a couple of insurance runs to give them the 3-0 victory. After loading the bases, Darian Sandford singled in A.J. Nunziato. Shain Stoner also scored on the play, reaching the plate on an error by the shortstop to give the Things some breathing room.

That room allowed Smith to come back out in the ninth, as he quickly fanned Andrew Cohn to begin the inning. After allowing a walk to J.B. Brown the righty went on to get Bubby Williams and Tyler Wiesmeyer to ground out to end the game.

Tomorrow night the Wild Things go for the sweep against the CornBelters. Washington will send out Casey Barnes against left-handed Tyler Stovall. Airtime will be at 7:20 with the first pitch coming at 7:30 on 95.3 WJPA.

The Wild Things return home on Friday night to host the Road Warriors on a fireworks night at CONSOL Energy Park. Tickets are available and can be purchased by visiting www.washingtonwildthings.com, the CONSOL Energy Park box office, or by calling 866-456-WILD.
