
Back to School Supply Drive for Victims of Harrisburg Tornado

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners are collecting school supplies for the Harrisburg Tornado Victims in exchange for game tickets throughout the course of this home stand at Rent One Park. The Miners home stand will end on Thursday, August, 16th. The tornado hit Harrisburg, Illinois February 29th. destroying multiple homes and businesses.
"We thank the Miners for their kind offer and we are truly grateful for the support of the organization and the Simmons family," Harrisburg Mayor Eric Gregg stated.
The Miners' efforts will benefit an on-going Back-to-School drive organized by the Dorrisville Baptist Church in Harrisburg, IL. District students resume classes Aug. 17 while kindergarten begins Aug. 27. Any fans wishing to make a cash donation can send checks to Legence Bank, P.O. Box 297, 502 N. Commercial Street, Harrisburg, IL 62946 made out to "City of Harrisburg Disaster Relief Fund."
"The people of Southern Illinois have been very supportive of The Miners and we want to give back to them by helping with some of their needs," said Jayne Simmons, Owner of the Southern Illinois Miners. "I can't imagine the devastation the families of Harrisburg went through in February. As parents, my husband and I can understand the challenges of providing for our children. We thought a collection of back to school supplies would be perfect. Hopefully, this will make the transition of going back to school a little easier for the kids and their families."
The Southern Illinois Miners are asking all fans to come together and help the Harrisburg community. All fans who bring in school supplies will receive two box seat tickets, which can be used for of the remaining games of the season. Since coming to Marion, IL, the Southern Illinois Miners have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year three times since its inception. It has also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007. In addition to the Miners 48 game schedule, it has hosted more than 100 college, high school and travel team games per year, concerts, professional wrestling, MMA fights and various private events in The Diamond Club banquet room.
