Joliet Slammers News Release
(Joliet, IL)- The Slammers won their fifth straight game on Wednesday night at Silver Cross Field in a thrilling ninth-inning finish, capped by an Abel Nieves walk-off base hit to secure a 5-4 victory over the Road Warriors.
After a scoreless four innings, the Warriors pounced in the fifth. Catcher Will Arnold slapped an RBI single to start the scoring, and he was brought home minutes later when Tyler Hall tripled to take a 2-0 lead over Joliet.
The Slammers would come alive in the seventh, though. With runners on the corners, David Fox brought one across on a fielder's choice, and Eric McGee tied it up seconds later on a run-scoring single. Fox later scored on a sacrifice fly from Patrick Norris to take the 3-2 lead, and Brad Netzel whacked a single for the insurance run.
But the Road Warriors fought back in the ninth. Ben Magsig started a rally with a one-out single, and they loaded the bases later in the inning. Wesley Jones then lofted a sacrifice fly to put it within one, and Slammers closer Amalio Diaz fired a wild pitch past McGee allowing the tying run to score.
With a 4-4 tie headed into the home half, Joliet didn't disappoint. With one away, Norris laced a double, and Abel Nieves launched the game-winning hit into right-centerfield to secure the 5-4 walk-off win.
Jim Schult had a stellar eight-inning outing, surrendering only two runs while fanning five. Diaz secured the win in his ninth-inning performance.
The Slammers continue their homestand Thursday in the series finale with the Warriors at 7:05, where Joliet will attempt to win six straight contests for the first time in 2012. Fans can listen to the game on AM 1340 WJOL with Aaron Morse and Greg Talbott calling the action.
