Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (31-42) vs. ROAD WARRIORS (3-10)

Wednesday, August 8 - 7:05 p.m. CT

Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL

Game #74 - Home Game #38 (31-42), (14-23)

RHP #28 Jim Schult (5-5, 4.87 ERA) vs. RHP #24 Matt Schimph (4-6, 5.22 ERA)

Last time out.

The Slammers put on an offensive clinic Tuesday night in a 14-2 blowout against the Road Warriors, their fourth straight win. The Slammers lineup got started in the second when David Fox ripped a ground-rule double to make it 1-0. Brad Netzel brought two across later in the inning on a single, and with the bases loaded, Erik Lis belted a grand slam deep over the right field fence to make it 7-0 Joliet after two innings. Matt Mirabel and Patrick Norris piled on in the third on a single and double to make it a nine-run advantage. Joliet didn't strike again until the sixth, but Kyle Maunus walked with the bases loaded, and David Fox hammered the game's second grand slam, handing Joliet a 14-0 lead. Matt Sommo earned his first Frontier League win, throwing six scoreless innings in the victory. Brian Smith, Dustin Quattrocchi, and Rey Cotilla finished off the effort in relief.

For Starters.

Jim Schult is coming off a rough outing against the Evansville Otters on August 2. He went five innings, giving up seven runs on six hits in an 8-6 loss for Joliet. He has pitched well since moving into the rotation for Joliet, going at least five innings in eight of his 10 starts. The Eastern Connecticut State alum spent 2011 with the New York Federals of the Can-Am League. The traveling team struggled but Schult finished the season with 10 starts and his ERA was the best on the team among pitchers with 10 or more starts that season. Schult was the Co- Division III National Player of the Year in 2011 at ECSU.

More power.

The Slammers have homered in six consecutive games; their longest streak of the season. They've hit two home runs in back-to-back games, the first time this season they've done that.

We're going streaking!

The Slammers' current four-game winning streak is their longest winning streak since May 29-June 2 when they won five in a row.

Home woes.

The Slammers have the worst home record in the Frontier League at 14-23. They are looking for their first home series victory since before the All-Star Break (July 6-8 against Normal).

Better when the game is close.

The Slammers have a record of 19-17 when the game is decided by two runs or less. They are 12-25 when the game is decided by three runs or more.

Walk this way.

Abel Nieves has drawn a team-leading 47 walks this season, good for 5th in the Frontier League. Even more impressively, he's the only active Slammers player to record more walks than strike outs this season as he has only fanned 29 times in 247 at bats.

First inning success..

The Slammers have scored 50 runs in the first inning, most of any inning this season.

Leading after six.

Despite their struggles in 2012, Joliet is still 20-4 when leading after six innings.

Save me.

Last season Joliet native Ryan Quigley set the Frontier League's single-season record with 28 saves. Quigley is now in the Padres organization but former Angels farmhand Amalio Diaz has picked up right where Quigley left off. Diaz is second in the league with 18 saves in 19 attempts.

Error indicator.

Joliet is 10-30 in games when they make an error. They are 21-12 in games when they do not.

Transaction Wire.

The Slammers signed outfielder William Hill and placed catcher Matt Mirabal on the 7-Day DL today. They transferred LHP Justin Albert from the 7-Day DL to the 14-Day DL.
