Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA - Chris Smith earned his first win of the season, doing so without any help from the bullpen. A complete game shutout by Smith gave the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, a 5-0 victory over the Normal CornBelters

The Wild Things struck quickly in the bottom of the first. Right fielder Allen Boyer led off the game with a single, and advanced to second on a throwing error by second baseman Sean Wilson. He was then brought home by center fielder Robbie Garvey on a double to left field. Garvey later scored as second baseman Shain Stoner reached on an error. Tim Leary followed with a two-run homer, his first as a member of the Washington Wild Things, to stretch the early lead to 4-0.

The early runs proved to be plenty for Smith. Smith was on top of his game, pitching a complete game shutout. Smith worked quickly, while showing superior command throughout the game. Smith also added four strikeouts in his nine innings of work.

Washington added another run in the bottom of the third inning. Third baseman Doug Thennis drew a lead-off walk and was later driven in on a double from Stoner. After three, the Wild Things led 5-0.

Jeriel Waller also provided a spark to the Wild Things, going 3-for-4 at the plate. He also contributed in the field, making a spectacular running catch down the left field line in the top of the third inning.

Tyler Lavigne started for the CornBelters, but only lasted two innings while giving up five runs on four hits. Normal's bullpen worked efficiently, allowing no runs during the six innings of work.

The Wild Things will continue their series against the Normal CornBelters tomorrow night at The House of Thrills. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and the first 1,000 fans to the park will receive a rally towel, courtesy of Service Link!
