Joliet Slammers News Release
(London, Ontario) - The Joliet Slammers (10-9) got a rude welcome to Canada as the London Rippers (9-10) beat them by a final score of 4-0 Friday night.
Joliet tallied two hits, one of which came off the bat of Plainfield native Tony Sanchez, who picked up the first professional hit of his career in the fifth. They drew six walks and left seven men stranded in the game.
The Rippers scratched a run across in the second against Joliet starter Eric Binder (2-1). With one away Stephen Cardullo drew a walk. He stole second but was thrown out at the plate by Trevor Willis when he tried to score on a single up the middle by JC Paquin. Jim Vahalik singled to move Paquin to second and Aaron Glaum singled Paquin home to give London a 1-0 lead.
Despite not tallying any hits early in the game. The Slammers had their chances. Two two-out walks in the first were left stranded when David Fox lined out to end the inning. A lead-off walk in the second was wasted when Zach Mandelblatt was caught between third and home in a rundown and got tagged out. Sean Estand was left stranded at second in the frame. A two-out walk in the third did them no good and in the fourth David Fox got thrown out at the plate after trying to score on a London overthrow.
But it was the fifth inning where the Slammers had their best opportunity. London had a 2-0 lead at that point as they Paquin had scored on a Binder wild pitch in the fourth. In the fifth Sanchez recorded an infield single for his professional hit and Trevor Willis reached on a single as well when he hit a hard one hopper that actually got stuck in the jersey of London second baseman Tony Delmonico. With two away Pellot drew a walk to load the bases for star power hitter Erik Lis. Home plate umpire Stuart Hall called a balk on London starter Justin Mazur (1-1). But after consulting with field umpire Tony Stangelo, they decided to overturn the call. The play would have scored Sanchez and made it a one-run game. Instead Lis would pop out to end the threat.
London scored another run in the bottom of the fifth in embarrassing fashion for Joliet. With a man on third and two outs, the Slammers attempted to intentionally walk Nark Samuelson. Instead, Binder uncorked a wild pitch and the run scored to make the score 3-0.
A David Fox walk in the sixth would be the last base runner of the game for Joliet. He was erased on a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Stephen Cardullo smacked a solo homer off Binder in the sixth to complete the scoring for London.
The Slammers will look to bounce back Saturday night as Tommy Mendoza takes the hill for the Slammers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. central time.
