Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (10-8) @ LONDON RIPPERS (8-10)

Friday, June 8 - 6:00 p.m. CT

Labatt Park - London, Ontario, Canada

Game #19 - Road Game #10 (10-8), (5-4)

RHP #19 Eric Binder (2-0, 2.46 ERA) vs. RHP #13 Justin Mazur (0-1, 9.45 ERA)

Last time out...

The Windy City ThunderBolts (11-5) scored once in the first and twice in the second to the early lead and they held on after that to defeat the Joliet Slammers (10-8) by a final score of 5-3 Thursday night. The ThunderBolts got a single from Chris Wade to start the bottom of the first. He stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Mike Torres drove him in with a RBI grounder. In the second inning the ThunderBolts took advantage of some Jeremy Tietze (0-2) wildness as a Hit-By-Pitch and a walk came around to score on a double and a RBI grounder. The Slammers cut the 3-0 deficit to 3-2 on a Zach Mandelblatt two-run home run in the fourth. But that was as close as they'd get in the contest. Two amazing outfield catches from Jareck West robbed the Slammers of at least one run and Windy City added some insurance sixth and seventh innings. Stephen Sauer (2-0) got the win for Windy City.

For Starters...

Hinsdale Central High School alum Eric Binder starts tonight for Joliet. He has won his first two starts for the Slammers since they signed him on May 26. Binder's last start was against the Washington Wild Things on June 1. He went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits in the 15-2 victory for Joliet. Binder brings affiliated experience to Joliet as he spent 2011 in the Cardinals organization at the rookie ball and short-season single-A levels. Binder pitched at Northwestern University and Trinity University in college.

Mind Binder...

Binder has not allowed a lead-off man of an inning to reach via a hit this season. Hitters are 0-10 against Binder when starting a frame.

Oh Canada!

Tonight marks the first game the Slammers have ever played in the country of Canada. It also marks their first game against the London Rippers organization. Labatt Memorial Park, the site of tonight's game, is the oldest baseball stadium in North America, as it was built in 1877.

Lead-off man...

Catcher Ben Hewett has been batting lead-off a lot in recent games, and for good reason. He's hitting a team-best .429 when leading off an inning.

Mr. Clutch...

David Fox is hitting .255 on the season but with men in scoring position he's hitting a scorching .429 with a home run and 11 RBI.

Road Warrior...

Zach Mandelblatt is hitting a team-best .379 on the road this season with all four of his home runs coming away from Silver Cross Field.

Playing the long ball...

Mandelblatt hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season last night. DH and Hitting Coach Erik Lis hit his first home run of the season two nights ago. Lis hit a team-leading 20 for the Slammers in 2011.

No hits allowed...

The Slammers pitching staff has held opponents to a .215 batting average, the lowest in the league.

Movin' on up!

RHP Gaby Hernandez became the fourth Slammers player to move on to affiliated baseball when his contract was purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday, May 21. He joins LHP Aaron Dott, Joliet native RHP Ryan Quigley and Darien native RHP Chris Pack as former Slammers in MLB organizations.

Transaction Wire...

The Slammers traded RHP Jeremy Tietze to the Abilene Prairie Dogs for a Player to Be Named Later.
